This is becoming boring

Updated:   Published

I'm 3 years into this Anesthesia profession, and I couldn't ask for a better gig; however, I'm bored. I currently work in a hospital with great people and stupendous benefits. Unfortunately, I really hate sitting behind the curtain for hours on end. I really enjoy the ASC setting, endo in particular. Things are fast paced. The day is over quickly. People are nicer. I get to talk to patients a bit more.

I have to do something different even though I'm scared. I cannot waste away here. Sometimes I wonder if I should have become an NP. Hey, it's never too late.

Anyone left a good job because of boredom. How did it go? Was the grass greener? Thanks for your feedback.

Specializes in Trauma, post operative open heart, medical devices.

Thanks Subee.  I definitely have room for improvement.  This particular environment doesn’t really seek elegance.  I have worked locums in many places: hospitals, offices, ASCs and etc.  I used to practice that way in those environments, but that is wayyyy to efficient for this place.  Again, I have room to improve.
I just need more flexibility with my schedule to meet family needs.  I want more sunlight. I want to eat lunch and actually enjoy it.  I want to interact with more people.  don't get me wrong, anesthesia is a great gig.  But I still feel trapped is all. No opportunity for growth in the area where I am passionate  Im also getting older and my priorities have changed significantly.  When student loans are paid off…

I’m working on it though. One thing I know for sure, I will do my best to never work in a hospital again. Too many egos.

Thank you Undercat!  It’ll be interesting to see where I end up.

Finding this thread now. I’m interested to see where you ended up?

I am teaching full time. Suits my family needs and allows me much more flexibility.  Pay could be better, but quality of life is more important.

Specializes in New Critical care NP, Critical care, Med-surg, LTC.

Very interesting to see what has worked best for you. So many of us in nursing hold up the CRNA as the end all be all of the best a nurse can be. While I'm sure it is exactly what many people are looking for, it's wonderful to see you post that you have found something else that works better for you. I'm sure that your students are lucky to have an experienced instructor, and you're probably very enthusiastic about your profession. Enjoy that time home with family, my second child turned 18 today and I can't really believe how quickly  we got here!

I am happier than I have ever been!  It’s not about the money.  I’m teaching anesthesia and I have my DNP now.  I absolutely love continuous learning and students.  I still work clinically, but not everyday.  I’ve taught ADNs, techs, and CNAs. I’m truly happy now.  I don’t earn what clinical staff do, but I’m happy. My daughter has her dad.  Things are beautiful.  Life is good.
I hope the students can see how much I care because I do.  I really found my passion.
Happy Birthday  to you and #2!

Specializes in ICU.

Endo sounds like a great option for you. Something more fast-paced. I would say it seems like GA bores you, so try working at a site with shorter cases and more turnovers. With that being said, going back to school is always an option - with a pay cut and loans.

I would really ask yourself - is it the profession of anesthesia that you're bored with or is it the cases that you're getting that is boring?
