Think I have a shot at an ICU job coming out of my program?

Hi all,

I'll be graduating from the College of Mt. St. Vincent this may. I've been told my college has a good reputation.

I also have 3 years of EMS experience as an EMT (BLS), and I have ACLS and PALS.

I live in NY, near NYC.

Specializes in Gastroenterology.

From what I understand very few hospitals hire new grads to their ICUs in NYC - NYU and LIJ do. Find out which other hospitals do and don't bother applying to the rest if that is the only job you're willing to consider. The market is very competitive and it will really help if you have a connection or have done a clinical/externship in an ICU that does hire new grads.

Good to know, thank you. I'll definitely look into those hospitals.

I'm also going to do a 4-week preceptorship in critical care before I graduate. I'm shooting for NYP.

NYP does not hire new grads to ICU or ER as far as I know fyi. They do hire new grads to their many step down units though, which would give you acute care experience.

I think that you may have a chance of getting an ER job just because of the EMS experience which will set you apart from the new grads without that kind of experience.
