Hi everyone! My name is Mike and I'm a 23 year old student. I just spent my last $500 getting my Florida licence to become a CNA ( Test prep, driving there, scrubs, and other materials, etc). After several weeks I finally recieved my CNA licence in the mail. For the last 2 weeks I have been applying at every possible place I can think of. Hospitals, LTC facilities, cna pool companies, etc.
NO ONE HAS EVEN CALLED ME BACK.
I'm this close to living on the street. Am I doing something wrong? Am I looking in the wrong places?
When I was researching a career in nursing, all my sources lead me to belive nursing is growing and getting a job in nursing, especially bottom-of-the-ladder jobs like CNA, was relatively easier than most other types of work.
I want to be a productive member of society and help others. Can someone help me? please?
Thanks for the feedback people! I was feeling down in the dumps earlier, but you guys rekindled a fire. I do go in personally and thought maybe they frown upon male nurses/cnas. But I guess they are not that uncommon. Anyway, by some luck I found out that an old high school friend works as a CNA near the hospital I live by. She has promised to help me out as much as she can.
In case there is anybody else out there having trouble and feeling discouraged, I'll write here what she told me to try:
1) Go on craigslist ( someone else mentioned this earlier, thank you!)
2) Be persistent to the point of mildly harrassing the DON. (Im very respectful and thought this was kinda forward, but it did make me smile.)
3) When you do go in to apply in person, wear your scrubs! let them know you are ready, even if you are brand-spankin new.
The bad news is, it still might take several weeks to a month to get an interview, even if you try your hardest.
Any other advice would be fantastic! jeez I hope getting an RN job isn't as hard as a CNA job.
Keep trying and pray about it. I am very surprised that you cannot find a CNA job in your area. Like I said in post earlier, look for something also in near by towns too. Be very careful on craigslist. They have a lot of people running scams. If there is no phone or fax number and legit email than think twice before applying. If the company is named in the ad do your research on the company to see if they exist. Good luck with your search.

I read your misfortune. I think you should relocate to another city or something. There a plenty of other areas that need CNA's. Here in NYC they need CNA's, PCT's, LPN's and RN's. Your liciense will go to waste. Starting looking for something outside of your area.
Good lucky in finding something.:)
