The "Bench Program" and Prozac for me please...

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I have read numerous posts about the job market and how weak it is. I don't know if I should be laughing or crying after today. A position for an RN position was recently posted on the companies website for the hospital I have been working at since 2007. Anyways got the interview. In the interview the unit manager advised me there was no position available. The interview is for a position on her " Bench" for when someone quits. This is crazy!!! Im thinking to myself ,why is this job even posted then? Not to mention I have my foot in the door because I'm in the system, and I have provided 5 years of loyal service to the hospital and you can't guarantee me a spot on your bench? It's as if all my hard work and dedication mean absolutely nothing to these people!!! It's just depressing....sorry, I know this post is sort of disorganized but I am just over the interview process right now.....if its this hard to find a Job when your in the system, I can only imagine what it's like for all of you who don't work at a hospital as a PCT or whatever else.

Was she NOT hiring you for the "bench" or are you just venting that it's there? Someone may be on the chopping block and she's getting her ducks in a row so she doesn't skip a beat!

Im just a little discouraged. I'm not mad that there is a bench program. I'm just upset that it was not specified. When I go to a job interview, I expect that the position is available. In addition, if an employee is interested in becoming an RN, and growing their career from within the system, then why shouldn't I automatically get the position on the bench? I thought promoting from within is what companies like to do?!

No promotion is automatic. You have to earn it by doing more than putting in your time. There are not enough RN jobs to go around even for those already in the system.
