The MED in memphis?

Published

Has any one ever worked at the MED? Since I am an ER nurse, and moving to memphis, i would like to get a feel for the opportuities there. I know it is in the midtown area and that it is a level 1 trauma ctr. but I am more interested in the do I want to work there factor. It will only be a travel assignment, so I guess I can live with anything for 13 weeks, but, testing the water.

thanks!

The Med is the closest thing we have to a "county hospital" here. If you know anything about that, you know that it's going to be a rough place to work. Anyone without insurance is taken to the Med, including vagrants/transients, drug addicts, inmates, etc. It's not your typical hospital environment.

That's not to say that it's utter chaos, but these are the types of patients you may be caring for. Also, the Med has the best trauma center in the region, so that's not to say you'll *only* be dealing with the worst population. GSW's, MVA's, etc from Mississippi, Arkansas, sometimes Missouri and Kentucky are flown to the Med.

If you're looking for solid experience, the Med is the place to be. If you're looking for an easy paycheck, RUN!

I would pretty much second that response. It is a rough working environment, but you would certainly learn a lot. My biggest gripe in having worked there is the lack of nursing leadership from the top, but that seems to be a problem throughout Memphis.
