The HRSA Nursing Scholarship

Updated:   Published

The HRSA nursing scholarship is available now. I just submitted my application although I'm probably a long shot.

How to Apply for a Scholarship

If you're interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, you may be eligible for a scholarship through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The HRSA Scholarship Program is designed to support students in various healthcare disciplines who are committed to serving underserved communities and helping to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in those areas.

HRSA offer scholarships to help pay for health professions' education.

All Scholarship awardees will provide a one-year service commitment for each year of scholarship support received.

The application cycle typically opens in late Winter or early Spring and closes in late Spring or early Summer, so be sure to check the website regularly for updates.

Scholarship requirements:

To be eligible for the HRSA Scholarship, you must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited program that leads to a degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • Nursing (including RN, ADN, BSN, and graduate-level nursing programs)
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Certified Nurse-Midwife

You must also be a U.S. citizen, a national, or permanent resident.

Have no federal judgment liens and service commitment.

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for scholarship through the HRSA's online application system.

Scholarship award covers:

  • Tuition and Eligible Fees
  • A monthly stipend for living expenses
  • An annual other reasonable costs payment

If you have any questions about the program or the application process, the HRSA offers resources and support to help guide you through the process. Don't miss out on the opportunity to receive financial assistance while pursuing your dream of a career in healthcare and serving those in need.

I called call center today. Guy I talked to said award letters would be going out in July and they're doing credit checks to make sure the information you provided is correct -- I'm guessing if whether or not you have defaulted on a federal loan. He also said it's too early to tell whether or not indivuals not in the first funding group have a shot at getting a scholarship....

No credit check here yet...The anticipation is killing me!!! Praying for us all...

ahhh! Thanks for checking! Let's all pray and cross our fingers!!!

Is anyone here not in the first funding group ? I'm beginning to think maybe I'm being a little too hopeful.

I am in the first funding group...Maybe when we all beging to get our decision letters and post them, we should also put pertinent information. Like first funding group, whether or not it's your second bachelor's, whether or not credit was checked? I know they did that last year, and it was kind of interesting.

That sounds like a great idea! I am also in the first funding group. This is my 1st bachelor's degree and I will also be a full time student. I am in my third year. This is also my first time applying for the scholarship. I checked my credit report about 2 weeks ago and nothing. I will check it again soon.

Hey friends thanks for the updates about checking credit reports - VERY helpful!! Let us know if they check you :)

I am in my second year in an associates program. I am in the first funding group. As of mid week last week I had nothing on my credit.

I, too, am in the first funding preference. I will be in my third year of a Bach program. As of yesterday, my credit had not been pulled. However, I don't know how to check again??? Any input would be great. I broke own and did the once-a-year credit pull that the government requires them to allow you to do. (I really should have waited until I knew some people had had theirs pulled) But, obviously I won't be able to do that again in a week or so. How are y'all monitoring your credit pulls? Would I have to sign up for one of those credit watch programs? Is there another way?

Also, I called them on Friday... I'm under the impression that the people at the call center really don't know anymore than we do. They are pretty much there to answer technical questions and unlock your account if you have too many failed login attempts. I say all this because, the lady that I spoke with said they would be notifying recipients by no later than July 31, and if you hadn't heard by then... you didn't get the scholarship. I happen to know this is not accurate. It's so frustrating that we can't get any straight information at all. I have tried to just give up and put it out of my mind multiple times... CLEARLY that's NOT working! LOL

She also said that they don't tell anyone how they choose. If there are 750 applicants in the first funding group, and they are going to award 500... they WILL NOT tell anyone how they make that choice. Also, she said that they have always required essays and LORs.

WHATEVER!! I'm so stressed about this.. I wish I could just let it go and focus on classes, but I know that from July 1st I'm going to be checking caller ID, email, and snail mail..... constantly!:uhoh3:

I just have to say that I can only imagine how long it is going to take them to notify 500 applicants. The previous year there was only 189 awards given and it took them until Sept 15th to even get their 1st notification via email....most had their credit pulled in July/Aug....I think we all need to sit back and relax and get ready to wait on the government. :-)

Oh yes, I completely agree. Supposedly.... they have their stuff together better this year. All of their funding was in place prior to the application process beginning. Last year they had some last minute additions to funding and were able to award more students than originally planned. It shouldn't be quite the long wait this year that was experienced last year. However... we are indeed dealing with a government program, and it will take as long as they need it to take to make sure it's done the way they want it to be done. Either way, as hard as I try to put it out of my head, I can't seem to do it! Luckily, I have already been able to confirm all my funding for the fall. That takes a bit of the stress off... but it is such a HUGE amount of loans, it feels like all I am doing is committing myself to a life of debt! Anyway... this too shall come to pass. It's completely out of our hands, there's nothing we can do to speed or change the process... and for most of us neurotic nursing students, that's a difficult feat! :)

Hi, new to forum. I enter nursing school this fall! I've been reading up on all the HRSA Scholarship posts since I applied in the spring, but I haven't posted 'til now.

I must say that I don't expect this to be a smooth process at all! If it took them 'til October to notify some recipients in years past, with less than 200 awardees...imagine how hard it's going to be for them to notify 500 by then! I will also agree with some of the other posters: those people answering the phone don't know crap. I get a different answer about everything any time I call.

Honestly, I am hoping, praying, counting....on this scholarship. I'm a displaced worker, doing odd jobs with a family of four. I am in the first preference funding group.

However, even though I know there is going to be a lot of bureaucratic red tape in the process, I know that around 500 people are going to be very, very happy! I hope I'm one of them, and I wish each and every one on this forum the best of luck!
