a struggle is life and life is a struggle.

As a nurse here in North Carolina the face of nursing is changing. Management is very educated, but very short on common sense and the challenges of nurses. Companies are putting clinics under their umbrealla and calling it a business. There are more boses than patients. Over 40% of clinic patients each day have no insurance or income, how long can this last? In the mean time, we as nurses put on our fire hat and aim our hoses at the hot spots as they blaze out of control throughout the day. Can anyone relate?

the current "customer service" mentality is to blame for much of what's wrong with nursing today. back when we had "patients" instead of "customers", our focus was on helping them improve their health so they could get out of the hospital, go home and resume their lives. now it seems that all we do is try to keep people happy. some people aren't going to be happy unless they get exactly what they want when they want it -- and that's not always recommended, safe or even possible

i loathe the fact that the term client is used so much. it really puts a business spin on things. it is kind of like saying, "we want your money! that is our main objective!" i always refer to my pts as pts.

The hospital before the one I currently work for, was very annoying with their titles. HUC's or unit secretaries were to be called (and had on their badge) BA=Business Associate, Charge Nurse= RC or Resource Coordinator, the CNA was called CA= Clinical Associate and so on. They tried to change nurses to something stupid and it didn't fly. Thank Goodness!

I worked in the NICU and when a kid's parent called the unit, an automated machine answered. "Press one for RC, press two for the BA, etc." Of course the poor caller didn't understand and always hit zero (in hopes of getting connected to a live person to ask for the nurse caring for their kid) which then transferred them to the hospital operator. It truly was the dumbest and most frustrating systems for callers and nurses alike. :down::down::down:

Administration and Management these days for the most part are a joke. Would you want one of these so called leaders with you in a tough situation. I would be amazed if many of them could identify the difference between a blood pressure cuff and a stethoscope, much less how to use it. Yet, the amazing part is they know how to tell us what to do and how we should do it. Many of them don't even round on units, They depend on consultants and stats to tell them if they are doing a good job or not. There is to much Smoke and Mirrows such as Press Ganey and Studder that has replaced common sense. Here is a consult for you. Come out of your glass palaces, come out to the unit and show us nurses and patients just how good you really are. Lead from the front and lead by example every once in a while. Many of you talk the talk, but fewer walk the walk these days.

EXACTLY!!!! It is all about customer service anymore.. Those darn surveys kill me... :rolleyes:

You are so so right with this. The hospital I work at is actually referred to as Hotel Degraff by both patients and staff. All we hear about is patient satisfaction surveys. We do have a lot of happy "clients" but it makes it frusturating to work at.
