The Dreaded Group Projects

Hello, everyone.

Looking for some advice..support..

I am currently finishing up my first semester of three in an RN to BSN program. I am going through the program at my local state university. It's all online. While yes, there is a ton of paper writing and such, the only issue I am having are these never-ending group projects. I know most bridge programs have them but mine is feeling excessive. Plus being all online, it's very hard to coordinate. My program requires a 3.5 gpa to get into and I expected more from others in my cohort... But seriously, this is like pulling teeth to get people to contribute or participate at all. I send out numerous emails, organize the project, etc because no one else will ever step up. How bad is it? For one group project I am currently in (and of course the leader for because no one else will do it even though I work FT and due with a baby any day now and everyone else is "too busy") each week 4/10 people participate. I literally have not heard from some people for over three weeks. I have gone to the instructors. They tell me "you've done everything you can as leader, it's up to them to participate now". Okay, but what about the final project? It won't be complete and that's my grade affected! Who then has to step up and do their whole part since they obviously aren't?

So what I'm asking here...Has anyone else here had to deal with this in their programs? Any advice on how to deal with this? I am having anxiety just thinking about dealing with this for two more semesters😩

I feel your pain. This pretty much sums up my experience with group projects so far in nursing school: "When I die, I would like the people I did group projects with to lower me into my grave so they can let me down one last time."

However, I would like to play a wee bit of devil's advocate here. You say you have a FT job and are a mother. Those people, to me, are the hardest people to do group projects with. Why? Because they want to complete it ASAP. They never know if an emergency will come up with their children, so they crank out the project as soon as the assignment comes out so they can get it done. To me, there are so many problems with doing a project early.

1) You have not learned all of the material yet. Sure, you can google info or spend hours rifling through the book, but isn't it so much easier when the teacher tells you what you need to know? It is a huge time saver when it comes to projects to just WAIT until you have all of the info.

2) Professors often change the rubric and criteria for large projects. I had one group project where we completed it a month before it was due because of a mother of four in our group who was eager to finish it. Well, we ended up having to completely redo the freaking thing FOUR times before we turned it in because the professor kept changing the rubric. It would have saved us all hours and hours of work had we just waited a couple weeks to do it.

3) In our program, the professors try to schedule large projects so they don't coincide with other large projects in other classes. It can be mentally exhausting to have to focus on a project that isn't due for a month when you have a huge med surg exam the following day. Prioritization is key.

4) In nursing, you can't do things way ahead of time. For example, if a med is due at 7PM, you can't give it at 3PM just because you want to be ahead of schedule. I think it is a valuable skill to learn how to work under pressure in a reasonable time frame.

That's my devil's advocate argument, however group projects really are just the worst, plain and simple. It definitely sounds like your group is no bueno.

Uggghhhhhhhhhhhh! I am currently enrolled in an RN- BSN program. I am taking Nursing Research and EBP and the group projects are driving me insane. It is absolutely the bane of my existence and I feel as though I can t possibly make it through this class. In researching RN to BSN programs I heard of several that did not require group projects. I am so frustrated by the whole ordeal that I am quitting my current program after this class and transferring to another program with NO group projects. Why in the world would anyone think that it is a good idea to excessively require group projects in on online classroom setting. We are all working full time and working different shifts. Majority of participants aren't even clear on basic instructions. How is it fair to be graded on someone else's work? We cant sit down and discuss all of the aspects of out project as you can in a classic classroom setting. It's truly devastating to me to think I may have just wasted so much money for nothing. My only hope is that my completed classes will transfer. Its really not the same as working in groups in a real life setting, its not even close. for good communication a group must come together and discuss all aspects of a project before, during and after. Its almost impossible in our non-user friendly discussion group and I honestly just can not understand why this is allowed. Its just truly bizarre and all of the group projects I have completed in a traditional classroom could never have prepared me for the nightmare that is online nursing projects! ~
