Marin General negotiators reach tentative pact with nurses
Nurses at Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae will get a 19.5 percent pay raise over three years if they ratify a contract endorsed by management and union negotiating teams.
The settlement comes after 15 months of talks between the California Nurses Association and Sutter Health, Marin General's affiliate, with the help of a federal mediator. About 500 nurses will be affected....
...The tentative contract also calls for increasing the number of meal and break relief for nurses to assure patient safety, safe patient handling improvements and health care enhancements....

Wow, this is huge. The RNs stuck together and provided evidence of management's wrong-doing by documenting that administration wasn't providing enough meal and break relief nurses to comply with the ratio law. Patients deserve to have enough RNs present and available, who are rested and nourished, to safely meet their needs. Collectively the RNs were able to sit across the table from management as equals and compelled them to agree to solve the problem, IN WRITING, and put it in the contract.
Thanks for the good news. This will provide hope and courage to other RNs in non-union hospitals about the power of collective bargaining and patient advocacy. Instead of whining about onerous working conditions, RNs should organize and mobilize with CNA/NNOC.
