Which is better: Not for profit or for profit?

Just curious....I recently moved here and I am wondering about the hospitals in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Does anyone know if not for profit hospitals are better than for profit hospitals? What is the difference? Also, what about county (public) versus non-county (private) hospitals? Trying to decide which hospital will be better to work at as far as a positive environment for me. Any input would be greatly appreciated......Thanks!

Well that's not an easy question. It really depends on what hospital and unit you work in. Generally speaking most people will recommend a not for profit hospital. I currently work for a for profit hospital and I love it there. I have worked for not for profit hospitals as well and really can't tell much of a difference. I think it will just depend on what you want, such as salary, how close the hospital is to where you live, getting the shift you want, getting the area you want, etc.....

There are soooooo many hospitals in Dallas/Ft. Worth that it can be a little overwhelming on choosing where to work. I would just plan to interview with several hospitals and see which one just feels right.

I'm sure there will be several opinions about several hospitals. Just remember just because a nurse has a bad experience at a particular hospital doesn't mean every unit/floor in that hospital is bad. Keep an open mind and don't limit yourself based on one nurses opinion.

As far as county hospitals go they are great hospitals as far as learning experiences. The pay tends to be a little less, but if you are looking for an intense, fast paced environment then a county hospital would be a good option.

Good luck!
