twu spring 2012 applicants!

U.S.A. Texas

Hey guys! I wanted to start a forum for us twu spring 2012 hopefuls!

About me

I have a 3.2, yikes! :sofahider, and after this summer it should come up to a 3.6 or 7 and I am studying my butt off for the teas and will only have 3 more classes after that to take. I have gotten into the university as the first step, but I am so worried about getting into the nursing program, fingers crossed :uhoh3:

Hey does anyone know if we can finish the BSN program within a year and half? Like taking summer classes?

No that's not possible. You can take certain classes like patho the summer before but no, you can't finish before. Each semester has set classes and clinicals. So there is no way you can finish a semester before. And i know this because my boyfriend just graduated from TWU.

@cabryan

Haha! Well at least you have a family!! I'm turning 24 this month, and i have a boyfriend of a long time, he just graduated nursing school in may, and we talked about marriage and we always said when I'm done with school. But this is getting frustrating lol. I just want a career. And TWU is stressing me out with all this waiting.

Yes family is good, but makes it hard to be a student sometimes. Congrats to him for graduating. As for being 24, you are still young... trust me. Marriage is great, when you find the right person and you are sure of who you are as a person & are ready to put the work in. (good marriages take a lot of effort, especially if you have never lived with someone) It is my personal opinion that, with the exception of a few people, most people should wait to get married till they are at least 25. People change so much from the age of 20 to 25. Just my opinion because of different things I have seen over time. Of course there are exceptions to that rule at times. Sorry, got on a soapbox, I am down now. lol Hang in there & keep working towards your goal & have faith. Things will work themselves out in time. We just have to remember to enjoy the ride, even when it gets bumpy or there is a roadblock. :)

TWU is traditional Spring & Fall like Nela said. UT Arlington has an accelerated program, but they have a few different pre-reqs then TWU. They go year round & I think it totals 18 months. Not sure if you are in the Dallas area or not.

i hate sitting out thru the summer it is a waste of time. I wish we had a choice to pull thru but patience pays

Itwould be nice to do that. I do think you have the option of taking the CNA exam after the first semester of nursing school. If you do that, it might get you in at a hospital somewhere & would look good on your resume as well. Just a thought. Good luck!

Hey just wanted to let those accepted to the Houston campus know that we have a meet & greet set up in 2 weeks....join the facebook group for more info, if you haven't already!!

So looks like Wednesday the second round emails went out. That's it guys no more emails! Unless one or two people of the second round back out, which is VERY UNLIKELY! :( this suckkksss.

anyone this applies to please respond. did anyone who got into pv be declining their seats?

It does suck... :crying2: but now we need to move on, re-group & make a new plan. Things will work out in the end. Just remember sometimes the things that mean the most, are the hardest to get... Maybe we should make a nursing school reject page... lol j/k :p I am going to redo some classes, get a CNA, and take the PSB for Collin's ADN program and apply for Spring 2013 at both Collin & TWU. In the meantime I am getting a better job & making some money:twocents: . Good luck to you all & don't lose :heartbeat heart. :-) We'll all get there some day I am sure. :yeah:and we will get to be a :nurse: eventually. :D

I'm currently at TWU Dallas Nursing if you have any questions (I should be studying for 2 tests next week, but taking a break). I requested to join the Dallas FB group as that may be easier for questions (I'll unjoin later).

You can take an elective class in the summer to lighten your course load. You can't graduate earlier though in the traditional program.

TWU Dallas J1 schedule (can always change):

Mon: Pathophysiology (9-12) then Assesment lecture 2-4 (not every week & some online)

Tues: Pharmacology w/Dr. Tapler 9-12 (LOVE her; tough class but she rocks) (AM); Concepts lecture 1-4 w/Prof. McMenamy/Team taught (afternoon)

Wed (all day): Assmt Lab or Concepts Lab or off (I had assmt lab 8-4:30 on Wed).

Thurs (all day): Assmt Lab or Concepts Lab or off (I was off/at work on Thurs)

Fri (all day): Assmt Lab or Concepts Lab or off (I had con lab/clinical 8-2 on Fri)

*(so you have Lab for Assessment and another lab/clinical for Concepts). BTW: you don't start Clinicals/hospital until week 6. Plenty of time to learn basic skills, patient care. You will have Hospital Orientation before then, but no direct patient care until week 6.

Lab/Clinical uniform (DALLAS campus; Houston is different):

-white top, maroon/wine pants. Can be any brand. Graduating seniors will start sending emails over break to sell theirs cheap (where I got mine) or check local stores, Amazon, etc. Buy at least 2/ea.

-all white or all black shoes is official (real world: some instructors don't care if you wear non-flashy running shoes; others enforce the solid color rule)

-nametag, TWU badge + ID

(Optional: blue zipper fleece- this is the ONLY jacket than can be worn during clinical. Most profs will let you wear any jacket during lab, but enforce this for clinical).

*TWU-NSA sells a complete package as a fundraiser for their pinning ceremony (not that much markup). You can get this at orientation. I bought my nametag, patches, optional nursing kit & jacket from them and bought scrubs on my own. I bought my stethoscope online ($85 w/free engraving). They recommend a 3M Littman Classic II SE, but any stethoscope must have diaphragm AND bell.

Orientation: TWU-NSA accepted credit cards via Paypal. You get your school photo id, register for classes (don't freak- there's no rushing to register as everyone already has a seat in each class), sign up for any student orgs, order supplies/scrubs and be overloaded with info. ;)

Majors sells the J1 textbook package. BUY THIS!!! I'm not joking. It's pricey ($900+), but some of the books last over multiple semesters. The package includes all the online codes you will need. Yes, you can save $100-200 by buying them separately at Amazon, but it's a huge PITA to individually buy the codes later.

Classes: don't read the textbook for Pharm (read/skim the chpts 1-8 before Day 1). Dr. Tapler tells you not to read the textbook, but use it as a reference. Her tests are directly from her notes. I skim the chapters for Concepts & read them for Assmt. Patho: you MUST read the textbook. Tests are from the publisher (ie: from textbook, workbook, online non-graded quizzes). Tests are not from her notes.

Calendar: Going old school. make/buy a month-at-a-glance calendar (I made a quick one in Excel). Don't rely on your phone/Outlook. You need to physically touch/see your entire month at once to see what's due.

Wow, that's an insanely long post.

I'm a details, org person but remember being overwhelmed the first 2 weeks.

Forgot: you also need a long-sleeve, kneelength/mid thigh white labcoat (bought mine on Amazon). Some require you to wear this to preclinical; mine doesn't but I still wear it.

@Mippy...Thank you so much for the info! I am sure that we have a million other questions and I will friend you on FB if that is ok? Thanks again!
