PVAMU-Fall 2007

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hello to all...

I just received my acceptance letter to Prairie View (Fall 2007).... I am so excited!

Has anyone else received letters of acceptance to their program? I would love to find other classmates.

Also, is there anyone out there currently in the program or who just completed the program that can give me some pointers?

Thanks

Specializes in ICU.
ketcia, yes, i joined yesterday. i've been lurking for about a month because i'm planning on going to CRNA school and needed some info and when i did a search, i found this website. I felt a need to share my opinion on this issue (so i joined), after all it is a discussion forum. By the way, I graduated dec-2006. Do you want my FULL NAME to double check? get a grip on life, there's more to life than nursing school or being a nurse!

good thing about PV for me was the fact that i made very wonderful friends here. lifelong friends. i'm proud to be a nurse. period. not necessarily proud to be a PV nurse!

To all those who want or have to go to PV, it's a hard journey, but we'll be here to support each other. I don't mean to discourage anyone. just be armed. i got plenty of resources (books) that i bought but don't plan on selling. I could lend them out especially my care plan books. PM me for more info.

Grip on life...whatever boo.

What is the average schedule for the first semester?

I need to know for childcare purposes.

All of the counslors where out of the office.

Thanks

it's hard to know the schedules before school starts. but during my first semester, we didn't start clinicals(at the hospital) till after 6-7 weeks into school. we had morning clinicals or evening or all day saturday. clinicals are twice a week except you choose saturday clinicals. you didn't get to choose where you wanted but you could switch with your classmates. Again schedules come out as time goes on. we pretty much went with the flow. clinical schedules could come out today, and clinicals start three days later. we were expected to go with the flow. when you begin you'll have a calendar but you would hardly know which group you'll be in till later. Your best option will be to talk to semester one coordinator Mrs. Landson, M. she is very honest, knowleadgeable about semester one stuff and will answer most of your questions and concerns.

any teachers to avoid?

any teachers to avoid?

no not really. just be on time for class and complete your assignments on time and READ the chapters before class because PVAMU love quizzes.

Wow.......

It's interesting b/c the same stories that I hear about this school is what I hear about Southern University A & M and Dillard Nursing school so I guess each school has their own lil story to tell. If I get accepted I will do my best regardless of the stories. If it's for me then God will see me through it.

thatz the spirit girl. Good luck and if you have any questions, i'll be happy to help. don't mean to discourage anyone just to give u an idea of what to expect.

I am taking pathophysiology during this summer at PVAMU-Houston. I decided to take it now so I can solely focus on the subject since I have heard it is one tough class.

Can any of you please give tips from your experiences in studying for patho especially for those of you that took it at PVAMU?

I have already borrowed the book "Patho Physiology Made Incredibly Easy!" from numerous posts on the forums by students who said it made patho a whole lot easier to understand. I hope so!

I loved patho. at the beginning you would wonder why you are learning this. if often felt like you were being taught to be a doctor and not a nurse. first of all, patho is the skeleton through most of your medsurg classes. it might not come together in your first semester but it will when you start learning about disease processes in med-surg, etc (semester 2 & 4). It's a good idea to take it this summer. so u have more time. what i did was i read assigned areas before class and put down little concepts i didn't understand to make sure i did before end of class. when i got home, i read over just the class lectures/notes/powerpoints. since i took patho with other classes, it was hard to do this every time but since you're taking it in the summer, try to do this every time, so you don't get overwhelmed just before an exam 'cos the chapters are a lot. i also used study guides and one of my group members had a book called "patho made incredibly easy" and it was very helpful.

Pathophysiology was one of the classes that forming a study group was very important because it was all about concepts. one of my study mates adored the subject and was good at it, and understanding these concepts from different people was helpful. you will be amazed how different people have ways of understanding a concept, etc. Need to have the right people in your study group else you'll regret it! 3-4 is ideal. Support each other!

Lastly, don't complete patho class without UNDERSTANDING the CARDIOVASCULAR and RESPIRATORY systems!!!!!!!!!. please don't!!!

I currently work in neuro icu and I love it. before starting, i had to personnaly go over the patho on neuro, etc. if planning on doing critical care one day, don't take this class for granted! a lot of people just want to pass a class, for your benefit, understand these body systems.

If Dr. I.I. is teaching this class, go to her personally or as a study group to explain certain areas. know her office hours, #, email, etc. she knows her stuff and loves assisting students and gets frustrated when people come to her when its already difficult to bring their grades up. the FIRST problem you encounter, go to her immediately!

thank you so much for taking the time to answer in depth! I will keep your words in my heart as I progress through this course. Oh yeah, I am taking it with Dr.I and you are right -- she KNOWS her stuff! She didn't hesitate to spend 10 minutes re-iterating the process of Acid-Base Balance. lol half of us were lost but she made it clearer!

anyway, thanks again=)

Igbo was a great teacher when i had her and she wrote me a nice letter of recommendation. She is very, very willing to help you. One thing you should definitely know until you get it 150% is being able to tell if the disease is either respritory or metabolic, acid or alkaline. This will be in EVERY test once you go over it.

and if you have a high C dont worry, if you put your time into that project and make it a quality project then you will get a fair grade and its a nice bump for your grade.

Hey,

Congratulations to all of you who have been accepted to PV. I just finished semester 1. It was definitely a challenge. You have to study hard and don't slack off. PV is disorganized, but it is a good program. I loved the first semester. Our class started with about 95 or so people and we lost several. PV usually has only about 30-35 people graduate each semester. The final is often 25% of your final grade and can cause you to fail if you don't do well. Respect yourself and the instructors, come to class, you don't want to get on anyone's bad side if you know what I mean. If you are not doing well, it will be hard to get help if you don't come to class. Don't expect any curves. 74.4, YOU FAIL!!!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!
