Texas Nursing Laws.. Need Advice

Published

Im planning to apply to an ADN program in December. I live in Texas and I was reading about the back ground checks that are required before entering the program. One of the things listed that your not supposed to have within the past 7 yrs was warrents. In the past I was late on paying a speeding ticket. Does anyone know if that will prevent me from be accepted into the program? Thanks for your help!

While we are unable to provide legal advise here but it sounds like that would disqualify you from being accepted. Also you have a warrant for FAILURE to pay a speeding ticket, seems petty compared to not being allow into a nursing program hey?

Im sorry maybe you misunderstood. I HAD one a long time ago, but still within the past 7 years.

I live in Texas as well and this is what my nursing program says about the back ground check:

"The criminal-background check reviews a person's criminal history at least seven years prior to the date of program application. The check will include all cities and counties of the person's residency during that time period. The following histories will disqualify an individual from consideration for a clinical rotation:

  • felony convictions;
  • misdemeanor convictions or felony deferred adjudications involving crimes against persons, e.g. physical or sexual abuse;
  • misdemeanor convictions related to moral turpitude, e.g. prostitution, public lewdness/exposure, etc.;
  • felony deferred adjudications for the sale, possession, distribution, or transfer of narcotics or controlled substances; or
  • registered sex offender.

Exception: If a licensing/registry body, e.g. the Texas Board of Nursing approves the individual to take the licensing/credentialing exam, the individual may participate in the clinical portion of the Nursing Program. (See Texas Board of Nursing information below)

However, even with approval from a licensing/registry body, each clinical facility reserves the right to deny access to a student with a criminal background or positive drug screen. In this event, a student may be dismissed from the Nursing Program. "

Thats is copy and pasted directly from the Broohaven website...

Mine doesn't say anything about traffic warrants....

Are you sure thats what your school says?

I'd hope that doesnt apply everywhere I had a warrant from back before I turned 18 and got my drivers lisence :(:confused:

That'S in the Dallas area BTW
