Hello fellow nurses,
I'm looking to take a travel assignment in the near future and possibly a permanent move to Texas if it's "liveable". Any advice on where to take my first assignment? I'm a young married African American woman with 2 kids age 12,5. My husband is about to graduate with a degree in graphic design so I need somewhere with a great job market for nurses and graphic designers as well as good school systems. Any help and advice would be appreciated.

There are a lot of nurse travelers from Texas who refuse to work in Texas. Just a heads up. You might consider cities and outlying towns in the Midwest for housing costs lower than Texas, similar nurse pay, good schools, and graphic design jobs. Maximum pay would be in the NE and Pacific coast states, but much higher costs of living. If you are set on Texas, try Austin. Very vibrant and high energy, and despite being the capital of Texas, progressive citizens. But expensive.

Austin is a great area. Highest cost of living in Tx. Average pay. Texas has no state income tax. If you look at the D/FW area the pay is more competitive as there are more hospitals. I lived in DFW are for 10 years. I loved it and want to go back.
Thanks for your reply....what's life like in Dallas....what's the best housing, best hospital, best schools, things to do etc.
Why do nurses refuse to work in Texas??
Management, physicians, and the BON.
Dallas is more metro and Fort Worth is more cow town. The mid cities are ( hurst, euless, bedford) is nice for access to both. School wise grapevine colleyville is good as are plano and frisco. I lived in Grapevine and my daughter goes to hs there. Housing in grapevine is more due to the schools. You have access to anything there . Major league sports, great colleges, shopping, museums and zoo's. i worked at Baylor in Dallas. Loved it. Parkland in the county hospital and trauma center.
