Temporary work for a New grad

Hello,

I'm in a pickle and am hoping for some good ideas from the brilliant members of allnurses.com :loveya:

I am a New Grad RN (with tons of experience in the field as a CNA and Unit Secretary), and need temporary work for the next 2-2.5 months to survive until my ICU internship starts (mid-October). I am frustrated because I don't want to lie to employers about how long I plan to be there, but feel I won't get the job if I tell the truth (so far no call backs on the jobs applied for). I haven't found any temporary jobs except an agency that is offering me a lot of money to walk into a LTC facility a few hours before the shift check out where things are and go to work.

I have more experience in Acute Care than LTC. They are teling me 15-25 patients as a med, treatment, or charge nurse in LTC.

Is this feasible? What can I do to survive it?

Are there other opportunites (in Portland, OR and surrounding areas) that I am blind to?

Please any advise would be so helpful!

Hi there,

we are in the same boat, i have been looking for a job since April and hopefully will GET IN the perioperative internship on October.

i had sent several applications (online and walk-in) to hospitals, agencies, kaiser, and LTC most of them turned me down because of my minimal in clinical/hospital experiences so i'm basically an equivalent of a new grad.

i also have an agency, called them last week to follow-up my background check, so it was already forwarded to them by the county jail, cleared. i was kinda upset because they didn't call me up about that and i waited for that background check for 3 weeks, they didn't inform me..

anyways, good thing the agency finally scheduled me for an interview (what interview again? am i still in the process of applying for this position?) and this interview will be tomorrow. i would go for it, it's still a job and need to earn money while waiting for "unsure internship" because yup, we have to consider the hospital that we are applying for these internships will still screen us during the process.

so if i were you and you have an agency too and they're offering you some asssignments, go work for it temporarily in the next 2 months..for what i know agencies are pretty much flexible with their schedules which all depends on you.

if you are planning to apply for jobs to different employers, better look for part-time temporary positions so you don't necessarily tell these employers that you'll just work for 1-2 months.

hope this helps you a little bit

Thank you. Yeah I still haven't gotten a call back. I'm just going to go hand managers my resume to all the SNfs, Clinics and Fred Meyers near my house tomorrow and hope for the best. Good luck in October!

are gonna have the internship at legacy too?

i sent my application to them about a month ago and i haven't hear anything from them yet so probably they will start calling their applicants this month.

i also applied to southwest washington, i already had a phone interview with the hiring manager but when i checked my application status it says thank you for the interest and they will still continue to search for other individual who fits the qualification..very frustrating in part..it is an internship program and i am not qualified even though i got some experience inside the operating room

i hope i might hear something from legacy, my only hope to fulfill my dream as an O.R. nurse but i still continue to search for temporary/part job just to earn some cash in 2 months..

good luck to you too! i know you can easily get a job because you have more experience.
