Nurses Career Support

What was your first RN job? What did you like most about it? Least?

Specializes in Rehab, pediatrics.

Acute rehab for spinal cord injury. I've been there for half a year and LOVE it. I love the patients and learning about the spine. I love seeing the patients get better and being able to go home with more independence. I'm so grateful for the coworkers that I have; they're an amazing team. I couldn't ask for a better first job. The things I like least is my schedule (continuously changing), vacation (goes by seniority), and I want opportunities to learn even more.

Flu shot clinics.

I was giving up to 175 shots per 12hr shift (4am-4pm).

Loved the experience!

It's amazing how much nursing assessment data you can collect just by giving a shot... And I don't mean just the physical assessment of the injection site, but how some corporations that we were assigned had employees who were really happy, healthy, and pleasant to talk with compare to other organizations where everyone was really grumpy, had other health issues, their physical appearance also said a lot about them....

Once, we were sent to fish packing companies where the employees didn't speak any English and they had been working there for 25 yrs...

It was an amazing experience .

I am not with no means suggesting anyone to join these seasonal job settings, but from a public health and psych nurse perspective, it is a great place to get experience on your free time.

This was also my very first job in any healthcare setting! After poking thousands of half naked dudes, I overcame the fear of touching patients .

Now I am working in a LTC facility. It is just a little too slow for me (I feel like I am gonna fall asleep) and here we have a little too much psych issues.

My goals are to be a really good nurse and have a really strong foundation in nursing !

I love to learn something new everyday and help my patients feel respected.

My goals : travel internationally (during my vocations of course) and volunteer in different medical settings!

I am intrigued by trauma , intensive care, and death/dying ...

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

My first RN position was a weekend night shift gig as a floor nurse at a SNF/LTC facility. It was not my first nursing position since I had four years of previous LVN experience. I liked receiving five days off in a row. I disliked the lack of shift differentials for working weekends or nights.

Specializes in ICU.

Mine was a MICU job in a very isolated city. The best part was my coworkers, who were AWESOME, and the worst part was having no friends or family within a 400 mile radius. After a year, I ended up moving back home because the total lack of a support system got discouraging. It's hard to meet people and make friends when you don't even have one friend to introduce you to other people, and I really got tired of doing everything from going to the movies to going to a bar to going to concerts alone.
