Hello All,
I would like to get into a private school for my LPN. Last year I took the teas twice and was off by 1-2 points. I have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. I did well on the reading portion, but not the math. I haven't been in school in quite some time.
What I have noticed is that I can't use a calculator, so while using paper and pencil to figure the math problem out my mind wonders, then I start to get frustrated. I need more time to complete the math problems, it would be easier if I could use a calculator.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to improve?? I already have the TEAS study guide.
Thanks for any advice!

As far as the ADHD, schools are supposed to accommodate you. I would ask for a seat in a quiet section and explain your ADHD status if necessary. Ask if you can take a break and get up every 15 mins if possible. This was great advice from a testing professional. It helps you to refocus. If you can't get up, close your eyes, stretch and deep breath. This helps to refocus also.
Just work those math problems with pencil and paper. My son is add/adhd and gets very frustrated with math. His mind wanders also. Perhaps if you timed yourself you could learn to do the problems within the time limits. Give yourself x amount of minutes per problem to start and gradually decrease the time by a minute or two.
You must learn to focus yourself. You cannot let your mind wander when taking care of pts. Perhaps you can find a program to help you learn good study habits for those with add/adhd. You will have to be able to calculate meds correctly w/or w/o a calculator. You may get a job where you take a med test w/calculations and can't use a calculator. So, investing in a program that teaches you how to compensate for your add/adhd would be investing in your future.
Good luck. You can do it!

You need to get a math book with similar problems and time yourself doing those problems till you feel comfortable. I too stink at math and i had to study alot in college also had a tutor to pass algebra and when i started nursing school the stuff here wasn't as bad. Oh ya and in college i was dx with "dysgraphia" i just figured out a way to study that worked for me and in doing that i was a straight A student with the exception of a B+ in Algebra. Good Luck you can do it.
