TEAS 6 Advice (Questions Welcome)

I have recently passed the new TEAS 6 exam and would like to ease any worries or answer any questions for prospecting nurses regarding the test. With a new version of the exam comes a new wave of concern, and I have broken down each section of the exam and have given you the most important concepts to study. Of course, no specific test material will be given or acknowledged. That being said, ask away! Nursing Students TEAS Article

I recently took the ATI TEAS 6 and scored in the 97th percentile. I would like to help those who have worries or questions regarding the new TEAS test. I am more than happy to answer your questions regarding the test without disclosing any questions specifically. That being said, I will break down what you should know to the best of my ability.

READING

- Can't stress this enough, know what can be found in a dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia, index, glossary, appendix, and table of contents. I had several questions on these.

- Be able to pull information from a visual medium (graph, picture, map, etc.)

- Know the difference between facts, opinions, biases, and stereotypes

- Know if a text is being informative, persuasive, or expository

- Know the difference between connotation and denotation, and be able to infer the definition of a word based on the context of a sentence

- Be able to summarize or draw a conclusion from a given text

- Be able to distinguish between a topic sentence, the main idea, and supporting details of a text

- Know the difference between something being chronological or sequential

MATH

A preface on the math section; just because a calculator is used on this version of the TEAS does not mean the math this time is significantly more difficult than previous versions of the TEAS. You can expect mostly the same concepts.

- Be comfortable converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages

- Be able to do basic arithmetic (add, subtract, multiply, divide)

- Know your order of operations (aka PEMDAS) when doing equations

- Solve equations with one variable

- Ranking rationals numbers from least to greatest, or vice versa

- Know how to do to percent increase/decrease problems

- Know how to convert between different units (conversation rates are given to you in the problem!)

- Know what is positive, negative, and no correlation

- Know what skewness is (i.e. when a distribution is skewed left or right)

- Know what independent and dependent variables are and be able to recognize them in a problem

- There are a few basic geometry problems regarding area and length calculation (again, formulae are given to you!)

SCIENCE

Another preface! The science section is the biggest section and is mostly anatomy and physiology. The rest of is comprised of general chemistry and some cell biology.

- Know the anatomical position and the terminology associated with it (e.g. superior and inferior)

- Know the functions of organelles

- Know the hierarchy of an organism, from atom to organism

- Know the structure and function of the 11 organ systems as best you can

- Know the four major macromolecules and what they are made of

- Know about the differences between chromosomes, genes, and DNA

- Know base pairing for nucleotides

- Know how to do a Punnett square and the terminology associated with it

- Know the charges and weights of electrons, protons, and neutrons

- Know what a covalent or ionic bond is

- Know the terms for changing between different states of matter

- Be able to balance a chemical equation

- Be able to determine if a scientific experiment is empirical or poorly designed

ENGLISH

If I had to give a single piece of advice for the English section, it is that just thinking you are literate enough to get a great grade is not enough. Many questions ask about specific grammar terminology you likely need to study beforehand.

- Know when to use an apostrophe, colon, comma, and other types of punctuation in a sentence

- Know the difference between an adjective, adverb, predicate, preposition, dependent/independent clause, and pronoun

- Know the difference between a sentence fragment and a run on sentence

- Know what subject-verb agreement and pronoun-antecedent agreement is

- Know the difference between slang, formal, and informal language

That is all I can come up with at the moment. Feel free to ask questions!

I just took this test and made an 88% with no studies and no practice tests. The test is the same setup of many other standardized tests: read the passage - answer the questions, do the math, etc. Nothing about the test format was confusing or hard to navigate.

Since I am so close to the threshold for exemplary status, I am thinking of retaking the test next weekend. Also, the results will give you a breakdown of what you need to focus on (and the applicable practice manual pages). Coupling this information with my borderline score, I will purchase the practice manual so I can have the review.

I take my TEAS on monday, I haven't studied like I should because I wanted to get a feel of the test first. I took the TEAS V didn''t do well enough for my school but didn't do bad either. My only worry is the science portion ! Ugh I hate this.

Does the test allow for any breaks? Also can you go back to a question once you pick an answer?

Hey ! Just took my teas exam yesterday and failed because of the reading. How long did you study for the reading? and do you feel the reading was like the Ati study manual? I underestimated this portion of the exam which is why I failed it. Any advice would be helpful. Everything else came pretty easy to me. Thank you !!

Hello there,

did you buy the practice exams on the ati website by any chance? If so, were they helpful or similar to the actual exam?

I am taking my Teas 6 test tomorrow morning! I have been using this post kind of as a guide.

Thanks for posting!! :))

I take my test in two days and even though my grades are usually very good, I was making myself sick until I found this thread. Thank you so much for your advice. It gives me direction and ideas on what to focus on. I'm so grateful. Math and science is my biggest concern.

Just to clarify and make sure... for the math portion, we are given FORMULAS, right? (For area, volume, etc.) I saw someone say they had to know how to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit on a practice test and was NOT given the FORMULA. Please help me get some clarification on this!! T_T

I just took it today and was not given formulas but only had like one or two questions where I would have used a formula. Sometimes they tell you how many liters are in a gallon or etc.

I am taking my TEAS 6 test in two weeks and I had a couple questions.

I just took the ati online practice test A. I have only studied the English section in detail, since I feel it is my worst subject, and got an 83.3% overall. Honestly I would be happy with this score when it comes to the real thing. Although I am going to be studying like a mad women till the test so I am hoping my scores will increase.

anyone that has taken practice test a and the real teas test, is the level of difficulty similar with the two?

Also so when I took the practice test it would tell me right away if I got the question right or wrong, is it the same thing on the real test? Or do you not find out anything till the end?

I have been using the mometrix secrets book for studying and when I read over the English section it is soooo overwhelming and I do not do good on that section of the books practice test. When I took the ati online practice test a I did ok on the English section and found it to be soooo much more manageable than the books test, does anyone have experience with this?? Is this book harder than the real thing??

Thanks to to anyone that has any advice for me!!

Hi there, do you recommend it would be a good idea just to buy the whole teas study prep course thats like $200.00 ?

I just took the test and did poorly, so I need to really pass next time. Math is my weakness, and the reading part was a challenge because I ran out of time!

What do you advice?

Please let me know!

Hi everyone,

So I recently took the teas on Monday and sadly failed!!!!! I thought I was prepared but apparently I was not! I scored bad that I do not want to post it. SO now I will approach it differently!!! I just purchased the ATI A & B practice questions.

I have the 5th manual that I bought when the version V was still out so now I am wondering if I should get the version 6. I scored very low on math and the reading because for reading I was running out of time! Spent way too much time on a paragraph and for the math well I just didn't know or practice on those type of questions.

So please anyone? Any advice that you will have would be great!!!!!

Another thing is now I don't know how to start studying? Should I do a set of practice questions first then review from there on what I need more review on?
