Teaching Plan for an Alzheimers pt.?

Published

Hello everyone, newbie here...I've been reading for some time now these helpful posts but hadn't had the chance to post a hello...so Hello! :D I'm really having a hard time right now, I'm a level one student that needs ideas for a teaching plan. My pt. has Alzheimers and I'm suppose to do a short teaching session for her and her family. It will only cover one main point and use of visual aids is important....now my big dilemma is, I REALLY don't know what I should teach my pt for it to be effective! Anyone have any ideas? Or have done a teaching for pt. with Alzheimers before? Any sites with info or ideas would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!!!

One of the biggest things in Alzheimer's is memory loss so how about a teaching plan to cope with that? You can got into things like a bulletin board with post it notes so that they can refer to it again and again for comfort. For instance carer has to go to the shop.Carer tells AP 'I'm going to the shop' two minutes later AP has forgotten and starts to look for carer.A board with large post it notes on it would say 'carer has gone to the shop back in five minutes' maybe a note on the front door as well to remind them.A daily diary of routine could also help so that they know what they are supposed to be doing. You can expand on these things.

Hi, lilace1369, and welcome to allnurses! :welcome:

Some ideas:

  • information about the Alzheimer's disease process
  • an easy exercise regime for the patient to preserve as much mobility as possible
  • assistive aids or equipment to help with any of her ADLs
  • why cutting foods and providing different kinds of finger foods might be important
  • if patient has difficulty with using utensils when eating, discuss special plates and utensils that can be obtained to assist the patient
  • ways to help the patient maintain independence
  • home safety measures to keep the patient safe from potential harm

Thank you so much for your help ladies!! I really appreciate it....I will look deeper into these and these are some great ideas for teachings!:yeah:
