Taking pre-requisite classes for the third time

Published

I graduated with a Kinesiology degree about 2 years ago. I plan to apply to nursing school. I'm in the process of completeing my application for 4 schools.

The problem is that I didn't do well in some of my pre reqs. I received a "C" in A&P1 the first time around and I received a "C" again the second time I told A&P1. I was going through some emotional problems at that time. I also score a "C -" in A&P2 and the second time i took it I scored a "C+". I took Microbiology and received a C-. The rest of my pre req such as nutrition, psychology, chemistry, statistics I received A's.

I know A&P 1 and 2 and Microbiology are major pre reqs I need to do well in. Unfortunately, I did not. I plan to re take just A&P1 and Microbiology. What are the chances I will get into schools? Will they allow repeats of three times? My cum. GPA is 2.75. Again, it is fairly low. What are my options? I really don't know what else I can do besides Nursing. Im curenntly working a fitness center as a manager and I hate the job. The pay is not great and I need something better. I plan to attend an EMT course at a hospital this coming Fall. Perhaps, schools will take that into consideration.

The first thing I would do is call the schools you are going to apply to and see if they will let you take them a third time. I'm not sure you can. Also see if they only take the most recent grade, or if they factor in all three...basically go get advised! That way you don't waste your time and money. Good luck!

Each program has their own policies regarding repeats. You really need to speak directly to the program director of the nursing school you're applying to, before taking any more prerequisite repeats.

Good luck to you!

I agree with the other posters about getting advised by the schools. At my program you are not allowed to re-take any pre-reqs. Good luck!

So I spoke to one of the schools and here is what one of the assistant director said,

"Taking those classes twice ad getting Cs will probably hinder your chances of being accepted into the program. Taking them a third time probably won't do much to help you get into Nursing"

I responded back saying "What if I take those classes the third time and get "A's" in them? Will it do much to help me get into Nursing?"

She replied back "It is hard to say. Often time, the head of the Nursing department will not accept grade replacements. This is true if the original grade is a D. I will try to get some feedback from the Nursing department."

I decided to apply anyways since it doesn't hurt. One of the school does not require letters of reccomendations/ personal statement essay/ resume but I will include it anyways. They said it could be benefiicial

The nursing programs I want to apply for are all accelerated BSN programs for second degree majors.

If it doesn't work out for you this time, you might be able to wait. After 7 years (in some of the schools I have looked at) the sciences 'expire', so you would have to take them again anyway. And, if they coupled that with only looking back at the last 45 credits for your cumulative GPA (I know of a school that does this), that may make a difference in a yay versus a nay.

Good luck!

EDIT: The cum GPA calculations may be different with the ASBN programs, you will have to check each school requirements, they can be vastly different.
