Taking the NET Tomorrow, Please Help!

Published

Here's my dilemma,

I've been studying from the Study Guide for The NET and I thought I was pretty well prepared. Yesterday to be sure I went to the local library to look for more practice tests. I found a book called Master the Nursing School and Allied Health Entrance Exam. Well first of, it's wirtten for a lot of different types of entance tests. I read over their reading comprehension sections and it's very different than the ones I've been studying.

The format is such that you read an entire article usually in a science subject, and you answer questions all in the end. The questions don't ask for main ideas and inferences, instead it's asking for specific details from the article. I took these practice exams and I did horrible!

Can I just confirm with the people who have taken the NET, that the reading comprehension questions are testing on knowledge of main ideas, inferences, purposes, and themes? And you're most answering a question or two after one or two paragraphs, and not all at the end?

Thank you so much! My exam is tomorrow and now I'm afraid I might not be as prepared as I thought I was!

well actually it is a combo... you do answer all the questions at the end... but they are on main idea inferences, themes etc.. its not that hard at all i only used the study guide and it took me an hour to do the 2.5 hour test. i got a 76 on it on my first try.

Dont worry youll be ok.. ask me if you have more questions.. GOOD LUCK!!!

Thanks for the response.

It's great to hear that they're not asking for specific details in the article!

I ahve the study guide as well, it's published by Educational Resources, inc? My other question is, do you find that the actual reading comprehension on the test to be harder than the study guide ones? Or are they pretty much similar?

I wish I could have found more practice exams for the reading comprehension.

Actually, as the director of a nursing program, what I find most people fall down on is NOT the content of any exam ...but the concepts, tricks, and how to read the questions involved in taking ANY standardized, multiple choice exam. (including the NCLEX exams) For heavens sake, if you are reading this and your going to be a student for awhile....get some guides on how to take standardized exams. It will be the best money you ever spent.

As for the NET entrance exam it is put out by ERI (Educational Resources INC. ) and the study guide ERI publishes is the most accurate way to study for the CONTENT in it. Don't worry about any other entrance exam review book. Several companies provide entrance tests and they are all somewhat different.

The Princeton Review used to publish a guide on how to take standardized exams in general and it was priceless. Try something like that.;)

Another thing that confuses me is, I have been studying the reading and the math, but as I'm going through the past threads on here about the NET, some folks are saying that there are science questions on it? Are there?

Here's my dilemma,

I graduated high school in 1991 and have had no formal schooling since that time. I bough the NET prep book you mentioned and studied each night and did the practice questions in each section each night for 2 weeks. I took the NET and scored a 94 on it. The NET is like the prep book. The only thing that is not shown are the questions at the end of the test that ask all the psychological questions. Like asking you 4 different ways about the same hypothetical situation. Here is a breakdown of my exam

Math section

Whole Numbers

Decimal Operations

Fraction Operations

Percentage Operations

Number Conversions

Algebra Equations

Reading comprehension

Reading rate (actual averages out how long it takes you to read a section of work)

Critical thinking

The answer to your question about this section is YES!

The last section I mentioned (Psychological section) is broken down into 3 sections by the way you answer situational questions. You cannot prep for this section. They ask questions like, if you were aware of someone breaking a rule in your workplace would you A) turn them in to boss B) address the person about the infraction C) not do anything as it harms no one. Depending how you answer it filters into the below categories to place you into the categories listed. Nothing is right or wrong per se, just how you answer these shows what type of person you are and where you fall in your learning style.

Social Interaction

passive

aggressive

Stress level profile

family

social

money/time

academic

work place

Learning style

auditory

visual learner

social learner

solitary learner

oral dependent learner

writing dependent learner

GOOD LUCK and don't sweat it.

Just take a deep breath and relax...I am sure you will do just fine!!

Until AFTER I took the NET, I had not idea how huge a test it really is.. I walked in off the street and took it, no prep at all. I didn't even know what was on it! And I got a 99 so I'm sure with all the prep you have done, you will do great!!

good luck and let us know how it goes!

I did no prep when I took it... scored 53 on the math (which is practically a miracle for me since I hate math and never did well) and a 70 on the English portion. We had to score 40% overall to be accepted into the program, so I could have totally bombed the English and still gotten in. I'm sure you will do fine.

Thanks for all the feedback and support guys. My school not only has a minimum to pass, but whether or not you get in the program is entired based on how high your score is. Every year only half the people who apply get accepted.

So..my aim is not only to pass, but I gotta do the best that Ican. Any way..my exam is in a few hours.. WISH ME LUCK!!!!!!
