Hello, I am a 53 year old grandmother. I just started taking LNA classes. All the people in my class are way younger than me. I feel a little out of place. I do have a degree in computers so I have had some education past high school and that helps my confidence but I am just needing a boost with my confidence anyway. Words of encouragement are needed! Anything anyone can tell me to help me feel more comfortable?
I am afraid of the unknown and my ability to hang in there. I have been a care giver, pcsp and direct support provider on and off for the past 8 years plus I have many family health issues and aging parents that I have been very happy to be helpful with. The school of life has taught me a lot!! But, How can I excel in the LNA classes? How hard are they and maybe you can tell me the most important things I need to keep in mind as a future LNA.
Many thanks to all who are kind enough to answer me here on this post. God bless you!!

Hi Julie-
How are the classes coming along? I just started an LNA course, and I am 40 years old. The other girls in my classes are much younger, but that doesn't really bother me. I have even applied to LPN school, I do not know yet if I have been accepted, but I tried!
Let me know how your experience has been so far!

OK first.... Deep breath. :-) Second, you have caregiving experience! That is a huge advantage. Third, I got certified at 36 and also had a bachelor's degree. I found that much of what was in my book was common sense and general knowledge that anyone who listens to or reads news regularly will at least partially know. I went through my workbook and answered as many questions as I could without reading the chapter first. That way, I knew where my knowledge gaps were and where I needed to focus my effort. I also saved myself a lot of tedious, extraneous reading. ;-) Fourth, you've been around the block a few times. Trust me, you've done much harder stuff than this! You will be fine. Use your maturity as an asset. Think of all the drama and crap you don't have to contend with, just because you aren't 20! Seems like a bonus to me. ;-) Good luck and keep us updated.

My coworker is about 50-something and she had been working as a CNA for the past 5 years. She is a wonderful caregiver and residents' families have nothing but good things to say about her. She just recently announced that she had gotten into nursing school! You can do it too. :)

Thanks ladies! I have been so busy that it took me awhile to respond. I have my state exam next week for my LNA license. I am anxious!! Hope I pass. It's those 4 clinical skills I am concerned about. The written exam should be ok. I did very well in my classes on those. Can't wait till this is over!! : /
Another thing I was wondering about is if I should specialize in something.....for instance operating room nurse. But I never see specialized job openings in NH. Strange. I am probably jumping ahead too far right now but would it be a good idea to specialize in something to get a better pay?
