Switching to nursing

Published

Hi friends ,

I am a computer graduate...did physics, chemistry and maths in my high school...am interested in pursuing nursing as my career...i didnot take biology in high school...please guide what can be done...how much fee is there in nursing colleges and how much discount i can get thru OSAP progras and how much is the competition.

Is it wise to switch to nursing at this stage .. I plan to settle in USA...i am presently working as technical support...please guide friends?

Take up nursing in the States if you plan to settle there.

You can still do a two year diploma for RN there.

First off, you will need to meet the minimum requirements for admission to the faculty. If they require high school biology you will need to find an adult-ed program that offers it, pay the fees and pass the course.

OSAP doesn't provide "discounts", it provides LOANS to students who qualify. Tuition for domestic students is running around $8500 or more per year. Plus lab fees, books and uniforms, and other miscellaneous fees. You're looking at about $11,000 at Bloomberg, for example.

There are far more applicants than there are seats in nursing schools across the country. So competition is stiff.

As Fiona59 says, if you're planning to settle in the US, then you should do your education there and eliminate all the hassle and expense of transferring your registration across international borders.

That was GREAT HELP ...Thanks Fiona59 and the moderator...Can i do pre-nursing here in canada as i didnot do bio as a subject in high school

Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees

will this be recognised in USA..Thanks in advance

Is there lot of competition in USA as well? or i can find placement easily. How much will be the fee, will i be able to get admission in this course easily.

Nobody can say for sure what would be accepted in the US but someone with the faculty of nursing at the schools you apply to. It's not as easy to make this kind of a jump, no matter how well prepared a person is, as it looks from the outside. Sourcing the kind of information you need to make an informed decision from a board like this isn't the most effective way to go about it. Yes, people here are experts in a lot of things, but when it comes to something this complex, with dozens of variables, the best you're going to get is a guess. And you can't expect people here to do your leg work for you. I recommend you do some research into nursing education in the state(s) where you're planning to live then send out some feelers to them. They can tell you if a pre-health program from Ontario will meet their prerequisites, they can tell you how competitive their admission process is, and they can tell you what it will cost you to go to their school.
