Switching to a Non-Nursing Major

Published

Hey there everyone,

I'm a new grad, been working on a Cardiac Specialty Unit for 6 months now. I am realizing that nursing is not for me. Patient interaction is not my forte, and my anxiety/depression/stress levels have increased so significantly that I am questioning more than my career choice. I love the science of healthcare, but direct patient care isn't something that I want to continue to do, and I need to get out ASAP. I feel like a failure and a let down to my friends and family, but I just can't do this. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for an easy career change from nursing - possibly a clinical lab science? Some way that I could still help people but in a way that isn't as stressful. I know these kinds of posts come up a lot but I'm at a complete loss right now and really need some help. Thanks in advance.

Hi there and very sorry you are having such problems. There is a good thread that has some good advice on it.

Hopefully you will find some other arena to work in....best wishes.

A cardiac unit sounds very stressful! I also knew working in a hospital wasnt for me, but I am very happy at the Public Health dept. Maybe you want to try out working in epidemiology, research, health promotion/policy change, etc. Not sure what you are looking for, but just want to remind you there are many opportunities for nurses that are low stress and without patient are. I know friends in epidemiology and also HIV surveillance and prevention and they love it :)

Hope you find a specialty that you enjoy good luck!
