I am wondering if anyone has had experience with the Salinas Valley State Hospital new grad program in Soledad, Ca. I am in the final stages of obtaining a position in the program with the help of a staffing agency. The problem that I have run into is related to the fact that I went through an agency. I have had no real contact with the facility itself. The program is suppose to commence the last week of this month or beginning the first week of the new year. Is there anyone who could shed light on what to expect? What are the program hours or is it more like a month-long preceptorship?

Hello and welcome to allnurses.com

Great to have you with us.

I do not have any information for you, but others will come along and help.

Hope you enjoy it here!!

Are you referring to the state facility it is a correctional facility nursing does not offer a preceptorship you are oriented to a position you may be offered a preceptorship at Stockton facility.

This turned out to be a scam! I am a new grad, so I guess I get one pass for my temporary misjudgement. A temp agency from the SoCal area recruited me through a Craigslist ad. I researched and found them to be a legit company. However, after 3 months of fulfilling requirements, and being strung along with little to no answers, I refused the offer during pay negotiations. New grads BEWARE! Staffing agencies are offering "great experience opportunities" for next to nothing IN PRISONS. The fact that I am a new grad should not give anyone the right to pay less than half the rate of other nurses. I will performing the same tasks, enduring the same hazardous conditions and putting my license on the line. I could understand a $10 pay-cut, but geeeeez. Lesson learned. I accepted a job offer from a LTC and rehab center just a couple weeks later. It pays more and I don't have to leave my family. It is extremely hard to find work as a new grad in a hospital in CA (especially with an ADN). I have accepted that. I can and one day will get there, but for now I am grateful to even have a job in SF bay area.
