I liked this. It was neat. I posted some questions at the end of my survey though.
What if everyone leaves the house but yet a key chain is left at home? (sometimes i ride in my husbands car with him and leave mine at home)
What if they leave the appliances on while working in the garden and they dont have the keychain with them? (a fire could happen that way)
its a great idea. let us know how it worked out. good luck!!!

That was the same as I was thinking! But, in addition to that, what if something is left on while the person is home (sleeping perhaps)? This could cause a fire as well and more apt to end in death.
I posted my questions as well.
Thank you for both of your suggestions and comments. It is helping us think about how others will want from this product. Our current plan is to have the system go off when all of the key chains associated with the outlet leave the house. Additionally, many fires start from the overheating of wires, which our product is designed to detect and provide another means of safety. We are in the process of thinking of any additional methods and would love to hear any more suggestions! Thanks!
First of all, I love your idea!
But, I finished the survey and on further thinking about it, wanted to throw out some thoughts that I came up with...
Consider making the keychain into something wearable, such as a bracelet..or create it in addition to the keychain. I would have my Mom just clip the keychain to her belt in the morning, but if it was integrated into something more wearable, she wouldn't be so stubborn about it. It would also solve the issue of people going outside in the yard without their keys.
Also, work on a big bad one for the stove/oven. Many newer smaller appliances have heat or timer shut offs. Now, for folks that don't have the newer appliances, this still would work. But the one that doesn't have a shut off (that I know of) is the stove. It would have to be adaptable for the higher volts and would obviously cost more. But if it's cheaper than a new stove/oven, I think it would be a lifesaver.
FWIW, I'll buy this for her if it hits the market. You've got a great idea here...make it work!

Hello Everyone,
I know I am new here, but I felt that your opinions would be very valuable, because you work with the people who would benefit from us the most. I am from Boston University and I am working on a school project based on a new product concept that is designed to help the elderly.
Because of your knowledge, your opinions are very valuable. This is really important for the success of our project, so I really really appreciate you taking out a few minutes to take this survey!
The survey is intended for those who have elderly relatives.
Thanks a lot!:bowingpur
