Hi,

I'm starting my first NP job next week, and my is paid for by my employer. However, is it advisable to purchase supplementary insurance for myself? I don't know yet how how coverage how I will have-what do you think is a reasonable amount to carry?

Thanks for your help.

It is wise to have your own . Though your employer will cover you also, it is best to have someone in your corner who is only interested in YOU.

Thank you both for the good advice. Do you have any recommendations for insurance companies I should consider?

Thanks again.

Personally, I use NSO.

Should I Carry Malpractice (Liability) Insurance?

Thank you both again for your help. I also discovered that if you are a member of Sigma Theta Tau you can get a substantial discount through them.

I found the best rates with Marsh Ins. for the same coverage as NSO it will be about $300 less per year. Before you buy additional coverage, get more details from your employer. My future employer tells me that they will pay my premiums for malpractice ins., I just have to give them the bill. Since it will either be NSO or Marsh, the same as I would buy for myself, I am not going to purchase a second policy. That wouldn't make any sense. If the practice is just adding you on their existing practice or MDs policy then I would get my own coverage.

Good luck!
