SUNY Downstate- where to live?

Published

I have been accepted into the Accelerated BSN program at SUNY Downstate beginning this summer. I will be moving to NYC from out of state and was wondering if anyone could give me some information/advice about where to live while attending Downstate...I am a young female and I know that the area around the school is not particularly safe. Is it realistic to live somewhere like Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope, or Prospect Heights and safely travel to and from the school? About how long would the commute on the subway be? Does the campus offer any transportation to the subway stations at night? Any advice would be appreciated!

Southern,

Ok, well it depends on where you live. You do not necessarily have to pay for parking. Besides, considering the tuition compared to other schools I would not mind having to pay for parking.

I don't want to be a target either, with my out-of-state tags. It's something I guess I really just have to think about. I'm coming up to tour this week. Seems that the local public schools are "not great." I'm coming from suburban life and maybe I'll have to keep my vehicle to take the kids to a school out of the district...I don't know.

well, you will find the most out of state plates in NY than any other city. And there are actually some great schools. I don't know which but you can always find out!

Hi Southernbaby,

I don't know about the cost of insurance, but parking is only an option. It's not mandatory to pay for parking. It's true, public transportation is more than adequate. I"m from California, so I'm also accustomed to driving; but, I haven't had a car for the ten years I've been living in Brooklyn. There are many times that I wished I had a car, but I could always get a "zip car"....you should look that up. I live in Prospect heights. One block from the brooklyn Museum, 2 blocks from prospect park and 1 block from the 2/3 train. It's a nice neighborhood that's kid friendly. Parkslope is very expensive, but it's a family friendly neighborhood. Great schools! I can walk to Parkslope in 8 minutes. Also look up the Parkslope Food-Coop...it's wonderful. Good luck! You can PM me for more information on Brooklyn. I like to consider my daughter and myself, "The Brooklyn Mayors".;)

Thank you all for the info so far. I'd love to pm you honeycutts, but apparently, I don't have those privileges yet, maybe because I'm a newbie.:uhoh3:

I never thought about that (all the other out-of-state plates)...

As far as the schools, I only looked in the area immediately surrounding Downstate using the zip code for the school. I used a site called insideschools.org...then again, there's nothing like coming to see it in person.

Absolutely. you do need to come!

Take it from this Brooklyn girl- you do NOT want to NOT have a care available. The crime in the NYC area is bad. The area where Downstate Hospital is located is a crime riden slum. There are other areas of Brooklyn that are just as bad. Even if you live in a decent area, you do NOT want to have to depend on public transportaion to get places at night, weekends, etc. Criminals travel.

I grew up in Sheepshead Bay. Brooklyn (and NYC), have become crime riden areas. It is just not safe to go around by yourself. Especially around areas like Prospect Park. When I would drive through Prospect Park at night, I would slow down, but not stop, for stop signs and red lights. When I took the train to work on the weekends, I would only ride in the conductors cars. Stay away from the end subway cars. I NEVER took public transportation at night. You have been forewarned. There is a reason that people are leaving NY at record paces.

Lindarn and Sourthenbaby,

Lindarn, I'm so sorry you've had such a bad experience in New York. I've been here for 10 years and I've never been a victim of a crime, nor have I witnessed a crime. Of course there is crime in New York, there is crime everywhere. I also would not walk through the park at night, but there's not a park I would walk through at night in any city. You can contact the local police department of a neighborhood and request crime rates. I love Brooklyn and can't imagine living anywhere else in America.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, as was my parents.

If it isn't that bad where you live I am glad.

You could not pay me enough to move back to NY because I know better.

I left in 1979, four years after I graduated from Long Island College Hospital School of Nursing, and moved to California.

Lindarn,

A lot can change in 30 years. To bad you're not around to enjoy the resurrection of Brooklyn.

If Brooklyn had experienced a resurrection, how come so many of my neighbors are still trying to move away, and are unable to because of the downturn in the economy and housing market. They can't wait to leave because of the crime, cost of living, etc. They have nothing nice to say about Brooklyn, or NY in general.
