Suggestions on HCA hospital in South Florida

U.S.A. Florida

Hello. I am pcu nurse with 7 years experience. I work/ live in Orlando fl. Im looking into working with parallon staffing (formerly all about staffing) because they are one of the few agencies with per diem rates that are reasonable about $40-46 per hour. THAT BEING SAID...i am aware they work with HCA hospital that have a horrible reputation. Again, im doing this on a trial basis...if i dont like i will move on. I would like to know if anyone has had a good experiences in any HCA hospital in the central/southern Florida area. I know they are all mostly bad...but there has to be some that are better than others. I am terrified of getting a ridiculous nurse/ patient ratio. that is my main concern.

The only hospital I would look at on there is Plantation in the dade broward area. I dont see any others that would be good here in S. Florida. I would steer clear of Aventura, Westside regional...There are smaller surgical centers. I coulnt give you any info on those.

I have a friend that works for Parallon in the same area. She's never really had a problem (i poll her alot, lol) Id give it a whirl and see if you like it. I know she works JFK and Bethesda

I worked 2 shifts at northwest medical center in south Florida. I walked out my second day. It was in the ER. It was pure hell Pts all over the place. Never knew where the charge nurse is. All they cared about was timing from doc to pt. Some nurses had 7-8 pts. I was scared I would lose my license there. Never would consider an HCA again. I knew it was a bad place when they were hiring travel nurses in the summer months down here!!!!

Wow, never heard this much criticism of HCA! Haha.

What do you consider ridiculous ratios?

I believe our PCU has a deal through the union that states that they cannot have an assignment with more than 5 patients. Even on my floor, the nurses rarely have more than 6, although it does happen during season sometimes if there's call outs.

I work in SW FL. I've heard Doctor's is a good place to work in Sarasota. I work south of there currently. I know my hospital isn't the best, but there are many nurses that have been there for a lot of years and still enjoy it.

I would steer clear of Doctors in Sarasota...Beautiful hospital but poorly managed and no aides to help you...Worked like a dog there for three months and had to leave...It was horrible !!!

be careful with parallon. you can never switch agencies if you want to work at another hca hospital. also stay away from ft. pierce. I have been with parallon since 2012. I am trying to work at another hospital that is not hca. just for a break. the working conditions are usually a little hard. hope this helps. unfortunately nursing is rough everywhere and ratios are bad everywhere . nursing just is a hard profession right now.

real pcu? should have more than 4. optimal is 3. I did a contract in Sarasota in 2000 at Sarasota memorial. loved it. no unions around that much. 6 patients on a pcu is unsafe and no one should tolerate that.

Could you tell me about your experience if you went through things with the HCA hospitals in Orlando please?

i have worked for parallon for three years. I am not active right now though. I did go to a hca hospital in florida and had such a horrible experience there I didn't renew my florida license. stay away from ft. pierce. I was let go after 2 month because they said I had a patient complaint. at no time did anyone talk to me or ask me what happened. I actually didn't even know that someone was unhappy with me and felt that I had a good rapore with my patients that day, only two in icu. rather than ask me they just let me go. it was not a clinical problem. I have completed 32 travel contracts and never had a patient complaint so I don't know what happened here. it was handled in a way which made me very upset as I was not able to discuss any of the things the family brought up. some were downright wrong. anyway parallon did back me up in a way. I went on to two new contracts with no problems. I have worked in Atlanta, Houston and Louisiana for parallon. hca hospitals seem to make you work a little harder than others but there are good ones out there. I don't know how you find out. there are horrible hospitals that are not hca as well. it is better to find our from other travelers what hospitals they like and try them. it is a crap shoot out there. good luck.
