Studying in Texas, want to move to NY after graduation

Hey all,

I'm graduating from my ADN-RN program in December and have big dreams of moving to the big City (a decade + dream, might I add).

I currently work as a Clinical Assistant (CA) in an Emergency Room and have almost a year previous experience as a CA in a Psych hospital. I was curious if anyone has some leads on the best way to get a job in NY right out of school (and whether that is a bad idea or not...) and any tips on getting licensed there and in Texas simultaneously.

I think that you'll find jobs for nurses in NY city are notoriously unavailable. Esp. for new graduate nurses. I would try applying at the hospitals on time but I would keep in mind the enormous amount of applicants they have

You are in an ADN program. Most hospitals in saturated cities want a BSN. I think you should stay where you are, get a year or two of experience, and get your BSN. Whatever you do, do NOT relocate to NYC until you have a job.

I am in NY. Do not come here with an ADN and expect to find a job in a hospital unless you know somebody personally that can put you in the job. I don't mean know a nurse that works there; I mean someone that does the hiring and firing. The hospitals here only offer New Grad positions to BSN grads. Which is why this ADN-RN is in taking an RN-BSN program. Most of my cohorts (unless their mama worked there, or they already worked there for years as a NA) do not have jobs in hospitals (graduating class May 2013). Most do not have jobs as RNs. I work as a private duty RN. If you want to go to rural NY, as in Upstate, you MIGHT get lucky. BUT, that is a ginormous might. Many grads from downstate have moved upstate in search of jobs. It's not pretty here for the job market in any job.
