Hey everyone,
Background: 3 years of NJROTC, I graduated early... I already have my AS in bio, and I'm going to school for my ADN. Never been arrested, one speeding ticket when I was 16 (22 now), honor society at my local cc.
Questions: should I get my BSN first, or work on attaining it while I'm in the service? Why did you pick the military branch that you are currently serving? Are any of you still taking classes while in the service? How do you like military nursing v civilian nursing? Active v reserves and why?
Biggest Fear: not being able to improve my education while in the military, that's it.
Thanks in advance guys, I really appreciate it... The recruiters in my area aren't a huge help, and most are biased per their respective branch
More unsolicited advice...once you finish your current program and start working on your BSN, immediately start talking to a health professions recruiter. Start running and working on your PT (physical training). Find out if you can shadow at a local base if you live near one - I don't care if it's USAF or not - just so you can get a 'feel' for the atmosphere. A good recruiter, though busy, will help where they can.
Carolinapooh,
Do you have any advice for the chief nurse interview? That's pretty much all I have left to do for my application to be board ready.
Also, any advice you have to offer on a dream sheet would be appreciated. So, I'm a FQ clinical nurse applicant. I have 4 years Med surg experience. I'm really hoping not to get stuck in a clinic this early on, but I will if that's where I'm needed. I'm thinking I'd really like to go to one of the hospitals (I know there aren't many). I know that Wright-Patt is a large one, I went to tech school there when I was an enlisted 4N0. I also did a TopStar TDY at Wilford Hall many moons ago; the hospital seemed nice. You're in Texas, right? What's your assignment like?
I used to be stationed at McConnell AFB, KS. I loved it there, but they just have a clinic
What are the chances of me going in as a clinical nurse and eventually being able to work on a mother-baby ward? Does that happen?

You guys are awesome lol. Thanks for all of the information. As of right now, after I finish a CCNE or NLNAC BSN program, I plan to join the USAF. they're my first choice.
