Is this impossible?

Hi,

First time posting on here ever, long time lurker. While my path is not set in stone I do want to become a nurse. I graduated from a four year college with a degree in Psychology. My gpa was less than stellar at 2.75, I was someone who didn't know and didn't care about what they wanted to do. So I partied through most of college and just got by. Also had a bilateral dvt during my junior year and missed two semesters. Was in the hospital for a month, so that also through me for a spin during my college years. It wasn't until my senior year that it all clicked. I had a 3.7 for my final two semesters.

I always kind of wanted to be a nurse, but for some reason I ignored that. It wasn't until my senior year and the summer following graduation that I finally gave into what I feel I was meant for. I am in the middle of getting my pre reqs for my RN license at an accredited community college. I then want to get my BSN to go along with my BS. Then I am not so sure to be honest. Like I said my path is not set in stone at this point. I have really like the idea of being a nurse anesthetist. What can I do to be competitive if I still can? I already have that less than stellar undergrad GPA. I am willing to do whatever it takes, if I still can. I am in no rush, and I realize it could be awhile before I am competitive for CRNA school. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance :)

Why do you, "really like the idea of becoming a nurse anesthetist"?

1. continue preparing for nursing school and focus on excelling in your nursing classes. Try taking some undergrad science courses (at community college) to boost your science GPA - biology, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, life science math, microbiology... Anything that would build up a strong pre-med/science base.

2. Work super hard in nursing school. Go above and beyond in everything. Achieve the stellar GPA you wanted for your BSN. Have a nurse externship that translates to a job in the ICU upon graduation.

3. Work in the ICU for 2-3 years. Do you love your job in critical care? How are your critical thinking skills? How comfortable are you with running a code, taking care of a patient that is bleeding out or a patient that is septic and on multiple pressors, new ARDS? When you are ready - apply to CRNA school.

As someone said '...you really like the idea of being a nurse anesthetist...?' Sorry but I'm gonna hammer you in this for a minute. When I became a nurse and got my BSN, I didn't do it cause I thought I really like the idea of being a nurse, working longer hours Overnight and missing holidays, no. I did it because I wanted to be a nurse, In fact I wanted to be a fight nurse. I fell into anesthesia and gave it thought after an anesthesiologist suggested I look into it. I didn't know about the money or the job, but I researched it, shadowed people and the fell into absolute, stupid, head over heels love with it. That's why I do anesthesia, because I LOVE it, NOT because '...I really like the idea of it.' I'll tell you what you like about anesthesia, chances are you saw the money involved and now you all of a sudden like it. Do me a favor don't join my profession or any other profession for that matter and destroy it because you're only in it for the money. You need to figure yourself out before you figure out what you want to do with your career. Good luck to you.

Like I said, this is not set. I am looking into all my options. I may not even think about being a CRNA at some point down the line. I haven't even started clinicals and I plan on shadowing those who are established in the field. I didn't think a poor choice of words, would be so scrutinized. I honestly want to be a nurse, why else would I be going to school for it.

Thanks to Gazpaz for actually answering my question and not jumping on me...I just wanted to know something. I didn't actually say I am becoming a CRNA because I hear the money is good. You don't even know me, you just assumed. I come from the naive philosophy of following your bliss. Working as a nurse would be my bliss, at least that is what I feel.
