"I am interested in public health nursing or administration. Currently I have a B.A. in an unrelated field (liberal arts) and am working on an A.D.N. at a community college. I am wondering how to get into this field. I understand you need a B.S.N. but perhaps my time might be better spent getting a M.P.H. (if I can get into a program). What do you think?"
Some schools have a Direct Entry MSN program for people who already have a Bachelors Degree in another discipline; which may be a better route if you can get it. An MPH program is geared more toward department administration
My alma matter, University of Wyoming, has a 15-month 2nd bachelor's BSN program which includes community health as a part of the curriculum. In Wyoming, anyway, to be a PHN (public health nurse) you only need to have a BS with an RN (so ADN would work), or, more preferably, a BSN. an accelerated program like UW would help you get a nursing degree, a bachelor's at that, in possibly less time than an ADN. Let me know if you have questions about UW's program! I know many other nursing schools have accelerated or online programs.
