Student nurse new job

Published

Hello,

I am student nurse at one of the universities in Louisiana. I just got a job at one of the local hospitals as a tech in the ICU. Have any of you ever worked as a tech? If so, how was it? Did you learn a good bit? I am just curious because I am so nervous because tomorrow is my first day and I'm not sure what to expect. I was told that I will be on "orientation" for a month or so, which is basically working along side of someone else who is more experienced until I get the hang of things. I guess I am intimidated because as a student doing my clinicals, the instructor is always near by to guide you and to answer questions. If anyone has anything to share about their experience working as a tech of any sort before their RN position, I would love to hear about it!

When you are in clinical as a student, you are learning the RN role and expected to be working to achieve doing RN things and RN assessments. That's why you need your instructor there.

When you are working in a unit as a tech, you are in an unlicensed role and not expected to do more than your job description. They will teach you what to do and how to do it, and your supervision and resource for questions will be the staff nurses you support. You'll have the opportunity to learn other stuff, but focus on the job you're supposed to be doing, and you'll be good.

Hi there! Also wanted to let you know (in case you didn't) that there is a whole forum for aides/techs/assistants that you can find under the Students tab. You might be able to find some of the info you're looking for about other peoples' experiences in those roles by perusing that area.

Congrats on your new job!

I did not know. Thank you very much for your input!

Once you've been there for a bit and have gotten to know the nurses, I'd mention that you were in nursing school. Lots of nurses will take a little extra time to teach you something or show you cool procedures, etc.

Congrats on the job.
