Student Nurse Following Me

I was asked to take a nursing student with me for the semester for their community health clinical. I don't mind having students, although I've only had a handful and usually only for one day and that was when I worked in the hospital setting.

Any tips/ideas on how to make sure she gets the best out of the experience and doesn't run from HH screaming?? I work inner city so it's going to get rough/cruddy sometimes.

I would try to meet with her ahead of time and give her a quick rundown of what to expect. Find out what she will be expected to do. Being open and sharing will let her know that you are willing to go the extra mile with her and will let you know what to expect from her. This way the two of you can work together. While in the hospital setting, we used to get last semester students. They would be assigned to a nurse and work the same schedule. By the end of the semester, it was expected they could care for 5-7 patients without much input by the preceptor.

What I want students who go with me (for a day) to understand is the goal of home health (keep the patient out of the hospital and teach the patient self-management) AND how deep some of the relationships with these patients go! To me the relationships you develop with your regular patients are what make home health so special and different.
