I've heard about an externship for nursing students who are about to enter their senior year. Who has experience with this? Where are some good programs? What does the work entail, and does it usually pay? Do they offer housing for the few months you are there, and how long do the programs run anyway? What are the qualifications?
These sound like great opportunities to get some hands-on experience. How can I make myself an attractive candidate while in school?
Thanks! ~Ashley
I was really curious about it too, it seems that half or more of the 2nd year students at the school i'm going to are nurse externs...basically, they are a combo of LPN/CNA and they get paid about what LPN/CNA's make...and according to them, they can old do things that they have checked off on at school, and they get paid based on how many things they have checked off on...in our area (southern ohio/northern kentucky) they get paid about 10-15$ an hour. also, its not any specific amount of time its NOT an internship, its just basically a way of guaranteeing you a job as an RN at the hospital you are being an extern at.
I WOULD go this route, however i plan on moving when i graduate and I do not want a job anywhere near where i live now, so i may do this, i may not.
Also, according to the students, you HAVE to be in your second year, or going into your second year of school in the ADN program...

It depends on what internship you're applying to because all internships are different. Most internships want you to already have had one year of clinical experience which would make you eligible after your first year of clinical's which is the case at the VA hospital. But I know there are some internships that will accept you with no clinical experience but you wont be able to do as much. I would suggest contacting the hospital you want to work at in the future and ask them if they have a internship for nursing students and what their requirements are. Good luck!
