Published

I helped with a birth this week. Cute baby, seemed healthy as an ox, but crashed this morning with what looks like group b strep. b/g in the toilet, that has stabilized for now. can anyone give me some info on outcomes and such. thanks:o

It depends on whether mom was treated with antibiotics during labor or not, and how long before delivery that antibiotics were initiated.

I found a comprehensive study here:

Also, from what I understand from NICU docs here, the rate of transmission of GBS to a neonate is low, but the death rate from overwhelming sepsis once they contract it is high (around 50% mortality rate).

thanks for the link. it was found on the 36 week wab, but she had a very fast labour and no time for iv therapy. baby has been fitting, which isnt good and i will keep you posted on the outcome. it has been hard for me as a student as this is my first year and only my fourth birth. i have some really great support so i know that i didnt d anything to cause this. but it still sucks and i do worry about the baby and family. its a hard learning curve to take so early on, but a necessary one.

thanks for the hugs. found out today the baby has a metabolic disorder to do with long chain fatty acids. the poor wee mite had a set back today when his lung collapesed. sniff. thank God i have such great support in the midwife i am following and at school. blessings to all who have had us in their thoughts.
