Student Loans

Nurses General Nursing

I am a 41 year old pre nursing student who is single parent. I am finding it very difficult to work full time and try to take(and score well) in all of the classes. My tuition and books are paid for by pell grant. I am interested in information about student loans, preferably service cancellable loans, so that I can not work so much (I wait tables), and focus more on school. I am not very clear as to what service cancellable loans are or where to look for these types of loans.. Any info would be great. Thanks

you will need to check with whatever state higher education commission you are located in. Alot of states have grants or nursing loans that may be canceled with a service agreement. The caveat for most of these loan programs is that you must be currently enrolled in an RN program to be eligible. I am not sure if you will qualify as a pre-nursing student, but it never hurts to be up on the radar for money.

At any rate, anyone can get a stafford loan, subsidized and/or unsubsidized. interest acrues during school, in subsidized loans govt pays it, unsibsidized it acrues. you don't have to start paying back until 6 months post graduation. once you graduate, you can look for a job perhaps with the govt. many govt positions offer loan repayment. or you can apply for nursing scholarships, some are simply yours to keep, others require you to work for the govt for 2 years post graduation (with pay of course).

If you filled out the FAFSA make sure to do the Stafford loan forms with it. they will give a pretty sizeable loan sometimes, and the subsidized ones are sweet ;)

Perkins loans can be cancelled up to 100% if you work full time as an rn. Check out the website: http://www.studentaid.ed.gov.
