Strange relationships with doctors, threatening to fire me

Published

I work as a midlevel provider in a rural community hospital for 2 years now. *I have signed a contract for a total of 3 years.*I love my job and i like the setting. i love to see that i make a difference in my patients condition.*However it is a second time while working here i have been accused of unprofessionalism, and the accusations sound to me not only without grounds but also harassing and discriminating, and on a very personal and emotional level. These are the accusations that i have received:1. The doctors feel like i act that i am always in a hurry to go back home to my computers or to visit my parents in a neighbor city on weekends when i am not on-call. *My take on this is that i never leave my patients or work without finishing whatever needs to be done, *i try to be meticulous in taking care of every little aspect of patient care that can be provided by me in this underserved rural area. *I have never left my job with unfinished tasks for any reasons, but family emergency.*2.The doctors want to tell me that i am not allowed to give a patient an option to see the doctor instead of me. They say that by notifying a patient that there is an option to see a doctor i sound unconfident and unprofessional. They want me to tell a patient that i was requested by a physician to see this patient. ( which, to me, sounds even less confident and independent). The doctors want me to imply to a patient that she/he has no choice but to see me. *3. I am accused of not being confident. I have to mention taht I work with 2 physicians with totally different approaches to management and treatment. Evidence based medicine did not reach this rural area as a concept yet. Last year the doctors said they do not want me to talk to them too much or ask too many questions about patient related issues, they felt it was unprofessional and not confident when i formulated my plan of care and was consulting with them if this was ok with them. This year they said i am not putting my words in a correct order while communicating with physician and this is my second language problem. The doctors want me to ask them after i formulate my plan - instead of "is this ok with you? "(not professional nor confident) *- i should ask " would you support this plan of care?" (very professional and confident). To me it sounds all the same since i still formulate my plan. It all seems too prejudiced and discriminating.I have passed all possible EFL tests and have very high *proficient scores in english. I have graduated from nursing school with my masters degree.*I have worked for 8 years on the same midlevel *position in an urban hospital and received nothing but positive feedback and awards from hospital and collaborating physicians and patients.*I feel harassed because i don't see the grounds for such bizarre accusations . The administration's implication is that my second language communication with doctors not lifted to such a high philological level is in a way of *taking care of patients. (The patients are totally fine with my accent!) They try to make a point that by asking the doctors in a special way it will make me more professional and confident. *Which is fine by me, i will word my questions the way they expect me to, but threatening me that i will have to start sending my cv-s out if i don't change according to their requests - sounds too bizarre, personal and emotional to me.*I understand that there are always some new things to learn and i am open to learning suggestions and discussions.*I want to know if i am protected on the grounds of ethical and nondiscrimination laws from being fired from the job that i love and i feel i perform to the best of my knowledge, training and experience.*When i was looking for a new job, i was looking for a place that will allow *me to do my best to help the patients improve their health conditions.*However , i find myself spending more time speculating on how to behave with my teammates, it distracts me a lot.*It also puzzles me that instead of telling me in person what they ( doctors) expect of me, they *recruit administration that wants me to monitor doctor's behavioral clues and body language, and*change my behavior accordingly, and stop asking questions for example if i spot a sign of them (doctors) being uncomfortable from me asking them patient related questions.*I am not an MD and there are things that I am not totally comfortable doing in terms of patient care. Looking at all of the above*I increasingly feel that *patients well being can get compromised. Please let me know if anybody had the same problem and if there is a law that would protect me from being fired on these accusations, or, as a last resort, how to break a contract?

After reading your long post, it just seems that you do not fit in with their concept of what is acceptable for their "team". I think it would be best to put forth your best effort to do you job correctly but to start searching for a new position. You need to find a place where you do not have to wrack your brain to try to fit an image that may be impossible. There are no laws concerning personality conflicts. These doctors will succeed in pushing you out if that is what they want. Best to leave on your own terms. Good luck.
