Stony Brook Accelerated BSN Class of 2014

U.S.A. New York

I'm surprised a thread for the upcoming class of 2014 has not been created yet (or has it). Well here it is!!! Good luck to all :p

Is anyone here still hanging around on the waitlist for the 1 year program? Any word on when they start contacting alternate list students?

Hi Janewm01! I'm on the alternate list as well and I haven't heard anything. I did check out the forum for when people found out last year, and it seemed like people didn't find out last year until June. I wish you the best of luck, maybe we'll be classmates : )

Hi I am accepted in the '14 and am trying to decide between on-campus housing and a rental that is 15-20 minutes away. Does anyone know what the class schedule is like? Is there a lot of free time between classes? How late do classes go? How early do they start? The rental is in Port Jefferson. Are the roads/traffic bad in winter/summer? Thanks for any information!

@Robyn327

June is soooo far from now. Students who were accepted into the ABSN back in January must have notified SBU via payment if they are enrolling in the program. Even if they submitted a payment just to "hold a seat", shouldn't the students must have already notified SBU if they have decided to go elsewhere? This means that seats are currently vacant, but I just don't understand why they haven't been calling students off the alternate list yet?

Anyone else in here have any insight as to when students off the alternate list are contacted? Have they already started contacting students? How many students do they even put on the alternate list?

I've been patiently waiting since January, but I have grown frustrated, angry, and sad. Am I just inevitably waiting for a rejection?

Hi janewm01,

I know exactly how you're feeling! June is very far away! I have actually called and inquired about the alternate list. I have asked how many people are on it, what percentage of applicants they put on the list, etc. She said she couldn't give me any of that information : ( She also said we could hear anytime from now until class starts (I called in January)!

So here is why I think they have not gotten back to us, even with the knowledge early on that there are vacancies. I think they are waiting to see who has completed their prerequisites as well as the grades earned in them. I had one prerequisite to satisfy and I was sent a note with the decision that I needed to send proof of my prerequisite completion by 5/31/13. Considering the date is just prior to when people have historically gotten off of the alternate list, I think it's relevant.

The other consideration, is the 2-year decision. That decision just went out last week. Maybe they wanted to see who, from the alternate list, had applied to the two year and which of those candidates would be better for that program.

I have absolutely no inside information and it's just purely speculation. I've been doing a lot of thinking about this, and am going nuts! Hopefully we will hear soon with a favorable decision! Best of luck!

My experience with the alternate list (having been on it one year and ultimately not accepted, and then re-applying and being accepted straight out the following year and speaking with classmates that were accepted as alternates). Yes, it's frustrating to be on that alternate list especially when Stony Brook does little to keep you in the loop. Many who are accepted do go into SOLAR and accept the offer without having to pay a deposit right away, so the seat essentially sits filled until around May 1, and if they have not paid by then they will lose the seat to an alternate. Others pay the $150 and then ultimately decide to attend another school at the last minute so that explains why people get called in June (even after the first day of orientation, because they don't bother to tell Stony Brook they are not attending and don't show up to orientation). This is why it's also important to go to orientation, because if you're not there on day 1 or any other part of it, you're out of luck and someone WILL replace you. When they call names out on day 1, you better be there to say you're there or else the clerk will be notified to go to the waitlist and start calling.

Classmates who were called from the alternate list were accepted anytime between March and end of June. No rhyme or reason. There were at least 10-12 from the list in my class. I suppose once someone decided they don't want to go, they are replaced by an alternate. But who in their right mind would decline an offer to Stony Brook? ;)

All I can say is, hang in there! Don't get discouraged, anything can happen and don't give up hope until you get either a call or the letter in July that says the class is filled. Then if the latter happens, reapply! Just like I did :)

Paco, your empathy and concern for those going through this process is unparalleled. You really are an applicant's guardian angel when it comes to mental health! Thank you for continuously coming to everyone's aid! I hope if you have any dental questions (I am currently a dental hygienist) you do not hesitate to ask : ) Have a great weekend!

Thank you, very much appreciated! :) I will remember you when my teeth need a question answered :D

Hi Paco, may you answer this question for me or anyone who has already completed the program. What type of white shoes is required? I read some old threads someone mentioned

That they MUST be nursing shoes, is that true? Thank you for clarifying.

im about to start the program, but they said that regular comfortable all-white sneakers are fine. paco said not to have the program force us to buy the nursing shoes, esp since theyre ugly lols.

Yes, as stated above, all-white sneakers are fine (and much more comfortable than nursing shoes). If your sneakers are all white but have the slightest grey trim on them for instance, don't freak out, they won't kick you out for that. At least that was the case when I was a student. Just look neat and clean and you will be fine.

I got in : ) ! Thanks again Paco for your kind and uplifting words!
