STNA to HUC salary increase?

Published

hi, my name is amanda and i am a nursing student at cincinnati state. i am going for my asn, but like many others have to suffer the waitlist for clinicals. i've been a nurse aid since i was 16, which makes it 3 1/2 years now, i've been state tested for 2 of those years. i was just accepted into the health uniot coordinator program and wondering if it would be a step in the right direction. i have a 19 m/o daughter and work full time so i do not have a lot of spare time. i'm looking for a certificae course to take while awaiting nursing clinicals and am torn between huc, emt, and restorative aid programs. i currently make $11.50 an hour and could really use a pay increase. any advice on which program would be the best choice?

btw i am a very perceptive student, up to anything academically and a very hard worker. unfortunately i work for a facility that cares more about filling a title than employing good care providers and they refuse any kind of pay incentives or health benefits...

thanks, amanda

hello amanda, my name is ann and i too am attending cincinnati state.... have you taken all the classes you need prior to clinicals? i am told that taking the pca class will get you a pay increase in the medical field. i am thinking about taking the course myself in the near future.

Hello Amanda, my name is Ann and I too am attending Cincinnati State. Have you taken all the classes you need prior to clinicals? I am told that taking the PCA course and getting your certificate will get you more money in the medical field. I plan on taking the course myself in the near future.

I have to take 2 more A&P's. I was hoping to do one of the accelerated courses or honors, but I have to wait for acceptance.

Hi I am also attending Cincinnati State, but majoring in Occupational Therapy Assistant and I am also on the wait list. I just wanted to let you know that they are not offering the restorative aide program. I have already contacted the program chair about it and she said there is just not enough interest. So I am volunteering in a skilled nursing facility in the rehab area and they will be expanding in a year and need another rehab tech.

If I were you I would do the PCA training since it will be more in line with nursing and also it is only 1 week long. I had applied a long time ago for a health unit coordinator position at Jewish in Kenwood and did not have any experience other than customer service and I was going to go interview but could not do the hours listed since I did not have day care at the time. So I think it may be a waste of your time and money for the health unit coordinator classes when you could just apply and probably be hired on. But, if I were you I would go for the PCA. Best of luck to you!
