STNA Clinicals vs. BSN Clinicals

Published

Hi everyone,

I recently finished up my nurse aide classes and am waiting to take the state exam. To be honest, I had a horrible experience. The teacher was a very, very bitter RN who clearly had a gripe against the profession as a whole. To make matters worse, the two-day clinical experience at a local nursing home was-in one word- a disaster. I currently work in a hospital and am quite familiar with the idea that sometimes seasoned nurses don't take kindly to newbies, but nothing prepared me for clinicals. Besides the fact that the LPNs/STNAs on the floor were very rude to the students- The absolute disrespect for the elderly was shocking, and I was stunned at how many employees were openly unprofessional (One of the Memory unit residents was lost and somehow ended up in the employee lounge- there were 10+ employees in the lounge at the time. Not one of them tried to help her find her way back, but they had no problem making fun of her). I am one prerequisite away from applying to a BSN program- and this experience has made me hesitate slightly. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and have a fabulous week everyone!

It is heartbreaking when you see nurses act completely careless towards people when people are sick and at their worst. Nursing is something I am passionate about but when I heard how nurses gossip about one another and other patients I was really turned off by the profession. But thinking about it I realized that not everyone is like that and I definitely don't want to be that kind of a nurse, so if I can make a change in a patient's life, I really could care less about the choices that other nurses make. I'm pretty sure once i start working with such nurses it will be very annoying and upsetting BUT we always have to remember WHY we are doing this. It helps me get by in school and i know it'll help me at work! I hope you have better experiences with nurses! there are some great nurses out there! i've had the pleasure of having them as my instructors for the day.. and i've had the others too.. the bad nurses show you what NOT to do, so that helps too ;)
