Steps on how to apply NCLEX in Florida?

Published

I'm a U.S immigrant, currently residing in the state of Texas. I completed my Nursing degree in the Philippines last April 2010 and last January 2011 I forwarded my application to CA- BRN, I chose to apply in CA rather than in TX cause CA-BRN has lesser requirements compared to TX- BRN. And so, on March 2011 I received a letter from CA-BRN stating that upon their evaluation I did not meet the minimum no. of hours they required in Psychiatric Nursing and they want me to take up the Psychiatric nursing course in one of the schools in CA., they will give me 3 years from the date that they sent me the letter to finish the Psychiatric Nursing course, after 3 years they will destroy all my records.

I was thinking it would surely take time, because then I need to apply in one of the Nursing schools in CA. plus it would be another a financial burden (school expenses and other stuffs) and to think with this kind of economy the U.S is facing right now I don't think I or my parents can still afford to spend money for school.

I'm thinking of applying NCLEX in another state like FLorida. Anyone who can give me idea on how to start or the series of steps in applying NCLEX in Florida?

Thanks!

go to the florida bon website and follow the steps in endorsing, or if i could make a suggestion why not try vermont?

you can start by looking at Florida BON's website.

Are you planning on working in Florida? Or do you want to stay in Texas with your family? If you want to stay in Texas, just apply in Texas. Coz if your ultimate goal is to endorse your license from Florida to Texas after passing your NCLEX, you still need to meet the requirements of Texas BON.

I'm planning to work in Texas. I do not meet certain requirements in TX BRN like for example for International nursing graduates they would require at least 1 year experience as a registered nurse in the country where you graduated and in my case I do not have any experience as a nurse in the Philippines that is my first concern why I did not apply in TX.

i took this from Texas BON's website:

E)All international applicants must provide proof of working in nursing for a period totaling two (2) years (i.e. 24 months) at anytime after graduation from a nursing program.

F) If you have not worked at least two (2) years as a first level, general nurse within the four (4) years preceding the filing of the application, you will not be licensed until you complete a Foreign Educated Nurse (FENS) refresher course consisting of 120 hours of classroom instruction and 120 hours of clinical practice under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. The applicant required to take the FENS refresher will be given a six (6) month permit to complete the refresher course.

I don't know if this is applicable to you, but don't you want to try the refresher program? or have you tried contacting the Texas BON and see if they have some sort of exemption to international applicants who just graduated?

Be aware you may still have a problem if going to another state for initial licensure. Remember you are not applying for NCLEX but to be a registered nurse, NCLEX is just a part of the process.

Master Vacation Member can't endorse because they do not meet requirements for CA and have not sat NCLEX

As pointed out by Master Vacation you just need to follow instructions of the state board of nursing for initial licensure by exam, most require CES or some other form of assessment and I think you will find Florida and Texas have similar requirements and if you plan on working in Texas you may find it less expensive to apply straight to the state you plan on working in

If you don't meet requiremenets for Texas now what makes you think you will to endorse. They will still ask where you trained and may still require you to meet their requirements as if you applied intially instead of endorsing.

Not sure if you have checked what is required to endorse if trained outside the US but may be something worth doing

Thanks to all who responded on my post. I'm going to call the TX BON so I can make things clear on what would be the best thing to do.
