starting as a Public Health Nurse

Published

Hello everyone! I just find passed my Nclex-Rn 1 month ago. I just applied for 2 jobs as a PHN and in 1 they offered me a position.

I'm very happy and excited to start working there. But EVERYBODY is saying me that I should be starting in a hospital instead.

I know hospital jobs are hard to find. But I also know that PH is the area I want to work. Do you think I should look for a per diem or part time in the hospital too to get my experience?

Hi!I love public health, and will be applying to PHN jobs. All my professors have discouraged me as well.My question is: is the pay equal/ comparable in ph as it is in a hospital and is there room to move up and become a nurse practitioner or get a higher degree? One prof told me to go into ph after I become a seasoned np. I enjoy all fields of nursing.

Yes. Professors have discouraged my PH as a first option too. Personaly as a Daughter of a PHN I find this very illogical because every area in nursing has their own theory or approach. Although basic nursing theory is very important. Having critical thinking is imperative to succeed in any area. The C. T. Will come With practice. And I'm looking forward to start my PH job.

I make more as a PHN than my hospital counterparts here in NYC. Salary is dependable on location so it's very hard to say. I've never wanted to become an NP, so I honestly can't answer that part. But I know quite a few Masters Prepared Nurses who do not work in the hospital here in NYC.

Wow thanks!!! I will research more into this! I would love being a PHN!

This sounds like a great opportunity. Finding a job as a new grad can prove itself to be impossible. I truly believe any experience is great to avoid being stagnant. Also, if you try to branch out and try a different nursing route, you can always use your experience and market it in a way that caters to that position. Good luck!

akanini, I see that you are from NYC as well. I'm a new grad and have been dead set on a hospital job but that has gotten me no where. I am very much open to branching out to LTC or PH. Do you by any chance know of any PH opportunities here in NYC?

I'm just seeing this. Craigslist. CCM. Health first. Guild net. These are entities you can google for jobs. I don't know of anything right now since I'm not actively searching.
