Starting my preceptorship

Hey everyone,

I am starting my preceptorship in January which we are basically expected to perform with an RN and no instructor or any help.

I will be in a small town/college town ER on night shifts. I wanted to see if anyone had any advice on what to do to prepare for this and what to expect. Thanks.

Go in with an open mind ready to learn. I am an LPN but I can tell you that school "work" in the hospital is a lot different from actually working in the hospital. Remember you boundaries and what you are allowed to do and not allowed to do. Take notes throughout your shift of things to study and review. Don't be afraid to look things up (meds, diseases etc) Have Fun!

Good Luck!

Don't ever complain to management that your preceptor is to tough, a big no no! Be of lower profile than in nursing school, stay under the radar, my best advise. Have fun!

Keep you mouth shut and your eyes and ears open. Ask questions an be a sponge. Hopefully you have a cool preceptor, If not then suck it up and deal with it. Everyone has done something in their life at one point that really sucked. But otherwise just learn as much as possible.

Adding to the above posters... I've just finished mine (it is your school preceptorship, right?). If so, then make sure you are ready for each day. Get there like 20 min. early so you can get to know people and show you are serious about it. Treat your preceptor like they are the fountain of knowledge... you might find this difficult as not everybody is... but do it. You might have to adjust the way you do things, as long as you don't compromise safety or what your school mandates. Do double check meds! Be sure you never give anything without a final OK by your preceptor no matter if they seem to be giving you autonomy, as sometimes they are just so very busy they forget who you are.

Go with the flow... we all put such high expectations on this. Don't look at it as an interview because that will only distract you from doing a good job, and make you do stupid things. :lol_hitti
