This is my story. I applied for the LPN program at boces. I was accepted. In July I had what was called a Grand mal seizure. Aug 3-4 I had a 24 hour EEG. Just last week it came back and showed "suggestive borderline seizure activity, with spiking in the frontal lobes, nocturnally". Well the neuro put me on 500/MG bid Keppra to play it safe. Well I am a member at Braintalk. Alot of people feel very different about me becoming a nurse. My question is am I unfit to become a nurse. Is it discrimination if they do not accept me due to the one seizure and borderline EEG activity. I need to know this. I am not going to hide the fact that I am on meds and had this seizure. But I have to know what is going on before I start school next wednesday and then they find out and possibly kick me out. Please post and advise, many many thanks, Tracy
I have two seizures under my belt :)
I'm a 47 year old woman who had her first seizure one year ago in August at work. Initially I thought it was due to spilling Narcan on my hands while working in the ER. (side effect of Narcan is seizure). I had a generalized tonic clonic seizure after coming out of the bathroom 5 minutes after giving the Narcan. It was witnessed. My doc said statistically one time adult onset seizures don't recur and there was no need for medication. I did have an MRI and an EEG both of which were normal. On Jan 1 of this year, about six months later I had another seizure at work this time while taking care of a laboring mom - no Narcan in sight. I had another EEG - normal. Went on Tegretol. It has been 9 months and I have not had another seizure. I have no side effects at all from the Tegretol. I got my driver's licence back recently and have started getting brave enough to drive. I had an appt. with my neurologist last week and we decided to continue with the Tegretol since it is not impairing my life in any way. I will have another MRI in a year.
This has not affected my workplace except that I have a CNA come with me to the nursery when I assess a baby and have her bath the baby - something I used to like doing. Just don't want to drop a baby.

Hello thank you so much for sharing your story with me. I did only have that one tonic clonic seizure as well. But I did have the abnormal EEG so that was enough for the neuro to put me on the Keppra. It makes me sluggish and a little foggy minded, but I think that will wear off after a while. Glad to hear that you are seizure free. Hope you are doing well and hope to speak with you soon, Tracy

Lastly a special thank you to Roobarb` BULLETPROOFBARB
who directed me to this forum. It is great and have a good night.
I hope that school will not be too overwhelming for me while adjusting to my meds. Since you are all nurses let me ask you this, I am supposed to take the meds BID 12 hours apart to have a steady constant flow. I am trying to decide what time of day is best for me. An hour after I take it, I get very tired. So I don't want this to mess up my schooling. Any ideas? Thanks TS:)
