Starting nursing later in life

Published

Hi everyone. I'm a 40 yr-old man working as a machinist. I'm currently enrolled in prenursing classes. I guess what I'm wondering is- am I one of the few men starting down the path to nursing this late in life? I tried going back to school before, but circumstances kept me from completing school. Am I crazy? Is a hospital going to be interested in hiring a new nurse who's over the age of 40?

I'm 45! I used to work in the stock market. I have a pre-teen and a teen and I'm getting married in 2013! Whew!

So far I'm LOVING being a student, I've made Dean's List and Honors.

I can't wait to start nursing school.

Male ...42... just started nursing school...came out of construction and retail and real estate...the best decision I have ever made...not worried about "new grad jobs" worrying about completing my program... don't be fooled...jobs are out there if you are willing to be flexible! Go for it! Its never too late to do something that is really meaningful to you.

Haha they had better be, I am 46 yrs old, and 5 months into an LPN program. I don't know that I will be hired by a hospital for certain, but there are many places LPN's can work. Long term care, walk in clinics, Doctor's offices, community nursing etc. You are not too old to get started, I know plenty of people your age, my age, and older who are embarking on this journey as a second career. I know a man who just graduated last year, he is 58, and is now working on his RN. I am a female, but there are a few males in my class. I think it's great for people of any age really, younger people of course will have a longer career, but us older students have a lot of life experience, we all can bring something good to the table, young, older, or in between. It is alot of work, very intense, and it takes all of my time, but I hope it will be worth it in the end. Go for what you want to do, don't look back years later with regret, jump in, the water's just fine. Good luck!
