Starting NP School- working nights

Published

Hello!

Does anyone have any experience regarding being enrolled in NP school (in my case, part-time and web/class blended) and working nights as an RN? Manageable to an extent?

I am single with no kids, so that does not play a role in my graduate experience.

Any input would be appreciated- thank you!

It is definitely possible. I worked full time at night my entire program. I did all of my homework at work during the night shift; however, my unit is not particularly busy at night so there was plenty of downtime. I never had to study outside of work as I had 8 hours 3 nights per week where I could study at work. So, for me it worked out great. But I will say my sleep pattern is totally jacked up.

I have a friend working nights who is almost finished with NP school and they have not had any complaints about work/school interference.

Hi! I'm on nights in the ER and I'm applying for a FNP program for spring. The program is a hybrid one, but of course there are still clinicals to consider. I'm planning to group as many of my shifts together so that I'm not constantly switching my sleep schedule. I already do this and it helps a lot in feeling like a somewhat normal person when I'm off. I'm also saving up my paid time off so that I can use it as needed to get those clinicals done. I generally have some down time at night, sometimes quite a bit. I was able to study a lot and even write some of my papers, discussion responses, etc during my BSN completion program. Ultimately the most important thing is to ensure that you are getting enough sleep. Good luck!
