Starting a new job.. advice?

Published

Hi there! I am starting a job as a Graduate Nurse next week (with plans to take my NCLEX in about 2 after that). I'm getting more nervous and excited as the days go by. Any tips, tricks, advice would be VERY helpful! What to bring on the job, favorite scrub brands, things that got you through tough times or situations.. just everything! =)

What type of floor are you going to work at? Bring an extra set of scrubs to have in your locker.

Specializes in Med-Swing/Rehab.

A lot of people swear by Grey's Anatomy scrubs. They are nice but I am finding that I prefer Butter Soft by Uniform Advantage. I like Butter Soft better because it's more cotton and helps prevent you from feeling sweaty after all the baths/beds you will be doing (if you're a staff nurse). I also agree with anotherone, I keep a second pair of pants in my locker (but not a top). Don't ask why. -shrugs-

Are you going to be working day shift or night shift? My first nursing job I was BOTH - I did nights and days depending where my boss needed me. I prefer days because you're busy all day and you don't have to be bored. When I worked nights I was often bored in the wee hours of the morning and when you're bored it's hard to stay awake. (This was a rehab unit for hip/knee replacements so you can imagine the type of patients).

Also, like any other job. Just be yourself and be nice. I am very shy in a new place at the beginning but once I've been there more and more I'm able to be myself. Something you must know is DO NOT TALK ABOUT ANYONE WHO WORKS THERE TO SOMEONE ELSE WHO WORKS THERE. You will only make enemies. After you've been there awhile you will feel for who are better friends with who, etc. n_n And that's what I am going to type now because I'm at work and this keyboard is awful on the wrists. Good luck on the NCLEX and at your first job!
