Starting a Family as a CNM

Published

Hi there!

I will soon be applying to programs to get my masters degree and become a CNM.

My partner and I are wanting to start a family soon, but think it would likely be best to wait until after I am done with my schooling. This of course mean that I will be a few years older, and will be wanting to get pregnant very soon after earning my degree.

I, of course, have a few concerns with the practicality of this.

I am wanting to be a part of birthing women's journeys but do not want to miss out on being with/having my own little ones.

Are there any CNM's who would be willing to share their experiences starting a family as a CNM?

Any thoughts are appreciated!

I waited until I finished school and had about 2 years of experience before trying to have kids. As fate would have it, it took me almost a year and some expensive reproductive technology to conceive, so by the time I went on maternity leave I had almost 3 years experience. After my daughter was born we had an interstate move due to my husband's career so I was lucky enough to take a full year off after she was born. I've since found a job in our new location with part-time hours. I feel that I have a pretty good work/life balance. It all depends on your geographical area's job climate for midwives. If you live in a place with a lot of midwives, chances are you'll find a good fit!

That's great to hear, thank you!

Hi Magmorie! I am in the same position as you, and have also been contemplating this very topic! Are you applying for direct-entry programs with a non-nursing background? That is the boat I am in. I am finishing up my pre-reqs this summer and will be applying to programs starting in July-November when the last app is due. I've been having a hard time finding folks who are in similar positions, and would love to stay in touch along the process if you're interested for support! I don't have access to do PMs yet, but feel free to respond on here if you'd like :)
